Saeed Anwar in Preliminary Squad
Veteran all-rounder Wasim Akram is set to make his fifth appearance in the World Cup after being named in Pakistan’s preliminary squad for next year’s tournament.
The 36-year-old has taken 485 wickets in 346 matches, both figures a record for one-day international cricket.
Wasim made his World Cup debut in 1987 and was a member of the team which lifted the trophy five years later.
He captained the side in England three years ago when they reached the final again before losing to Australia and is currently a member of the squad on tour in Zimbabwe.
Pakistan’s selectors have named a list of 30 ‘probables’ from which the final squad will be chosen.
It includes opening batsman Saeed Anwar, who was dropped following the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka two months ago.
“I am delighted and will work hard in the coming season to find a place in the final squad,” he commented.
The selectors have also named three wicket-keepers, with former skipper Moin Khan recalled alongside Rashid Latif and Kamran Akmal.
Latif announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday, but is keen to play in the World Cup in South Africa before concentrating his energies on his Cricket Academy in Karachi.
The only new face included is 23-year-old seam bowler Abdur Rauf, who played for Pakistan A in their recent home series against Sri Lanka A.
There is no place for leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed, with Danish Kaneria chosen a second-string to Saqlain Mushtaq.
