Bitter Truth!

Pakistanis are even worse than Bangladeshis and Lankans when it comes to corruption and it seems that we are twice as corrupt as the indians (who have actually improved their ranking by 16 points over the last year or so).

However this should not come as a major surprise to knowledgeable Pakistanis incl. expats who know how the system works over there

Pakistan jumped three spots to number 126 out of 140 economies on the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) for the year 2015-2016.
The country ranked 129 out of 144 economies during the previous year’s ranking. This is the second consecutive year that Pakistan’s ranking has risen.
The GCI is a comprehensive assessment of the competitiveness landscape of economies, providing insight into drivers of productivity and prosperity.
The five most problematic factors for doing business in Pakistan during 2015-2016 cited by the report are corruption, tax rates, inflation, access to financing and insufficient government bureaucracy.

However, the previous year’s report cited inadequate supply of infrastructure as the most problematic factor, followed by corruption, insufficient government bureaucracy, policy instability and access to financing.

Corruption was also considered the most problematic factor for dong business in Pakistan in 2013-2014.
Pakistan is placed at the factor driven stage of development. This is the lowest level of development along a three-stage spectrum of development which includes an efficiency driven stage at second place and an innovation driven stage ─ the most advanced stage.
Furthermore, a heatmap created by the WEF shows Pakistan placing amongst the ‘worst’ countries on the GCI. It is followed by Mali, Swazliand, Liberia, Madagascar, Haiti and Sierra Leone, among others.

The GCI scores out of seven Pakistan’s competitiveness across 12 ‘pillars’ or dimensions, of which Pakistan figures highest on Market size’ with a score of 5 out of 7.

According to the WEF’s Global Competitiveness Report 2015-2016, no South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) country featured in the top 50. India, however, is close at number 55, followed by Sri Lanka (68) and Nepal (100).

Indians have actually improved their ranking from 71 to 55 (i.e. by 16 points in one year)

So Modi Government must be doing something good in India

And like him or loathe him this is a much needed step by IK and one that should be appreciated by everyone regardless of political loyalties.

Thats really a sad news and sorry stats for Pakistan. Very unfortunate for this country, the corruption prevails from north to south and east to west.
As an expatriat, i'm sure most of us would have seen how its penetrated deep inside the roots. You land at the airport, go through immigration there are ways when you can actually avoid arrival stamp by paying bribes to immigration or any other sorta problem. Then if you have to deal with the custom you can totally bargain with the "right" people you can go thru that as well. Then comes the porter who asks extra to carry your luggage. If the flight is from US he's gona ask for $$ or whichever country you are coming from. You take a taxi , he'll most likely charge you extra as well. I count all of this as corruption.
The ironic part is, you ask each and anyone of these why are they doing it cuz its illegal. They'll have atleast a dozen reasons to justify that. And guess what, if you are on the other side of this bribing, you are a part of this corrupt system as well, congrats!! :)

Can RS be blamed as military is continued to run the show in Pakistan? Unfortunately Zardari is not in power otherwise every corrupt tom dick and harry in this forum have used profanity against him.

My personal opinion of Karachi airport is quite good though. You haven't seen corruption yet if you have not visited Lahore airport.

questions for Nooras.
1- Has NS or SS taken notice of this ?
2- Is there a foreign/PTI hand in compilation of this report?
3- Has Pervez Rasheed been asked to comment on this(he is only kept for imran khan i think).

SS/NS will constitute a JIT on this report and add all their namak-halal ppl in it and declare the report null and void. and provide proof with Transparency Int'l and other audit reports.

it must be surprising to you that despite having a farishta like zardari at the helm off the affairs corruption has risen. How come? When your top leadership (read sharifs and zardaris) are very corrupt this is the result.

Just simple question, what happens at Lahore airport u deem.corruption...iam asking this because i use the facility for domestic and international travel at least once a month (at an average)...

Things are bad, and will gradually improve...we need a manmohan singh the economist, and we dont have anyone of this capability in any of the political party...anf what is srated above in the OP is best an accountant can produce...

I deem it corruption, when everyone there has their eyes fixed on your wallet. All of these people are paid by the government as a part of their jobs.

Reading some of the nonsense on here though you’d think the governance is great and none of us should question the government or those who support them.

How when??? Bro no one ever asked me of bribe if I have all the docs required??? Yes if they ask for money from people who have incomplete docs or objectionable material then i cant comment on that...

I dont have an issue if someone demands the fee for say, extra luggage, but when it goes into the pockets of the staff, then i do have an issue.

Ok! Now i get you, do not have extra luggage, is best way. In case u have, ask for proper receipt for the money...thats how the money is not in their pockets...

Just out of curiosity, dont you guys have app based cab services like uber, ola, TFs etc?

They dont overcharge and they refund your money if you complain about longer route taken by cab driver

No we live in caves so we dont have any such thing. Btw , not a single problem among these is one which you dont find in India. Corruption is down to to core level in India as well. However some economic progress is just making it "Andhon men kaana raja.."
