How do you go about doubling it? Didn’t you just see in the other thread how much tax our law makers and law enforcers pay? Do you know why agricultural income (in an agricultural country like Pakistan) is exempt from tax?

For me, the only way to go about it is to have FBR totally free of political influence and have the remunerations of their top management linked to the amount of tax collected. That is not going to happen anytime soon though. My friend, who was a teacher at a university, paid more tax (teachers’ tax is 75% off in Pak) than his father who owned and operated several shops in Liberty Market, Lahore.

At the moment only 260000 people pay taxes in Pakistan, and these would be the salaried persons (at least a big proportion). The taxation system needs to be overhauled to ensure that the people pay their taxes. But change needs to come from the top first, the ministers, parliamentarians, land lords, industrialists all will need to pay. Why should a person earning 40000 pay tax, and those earning crores shy away?
