Pakistan look set to repeat past mistakes

The more I read this the more I am convinced that people like Imran Khan and Javed Miandad are fully justified in their criticism of Woolmer. All this talk of opening with Akmal or Afridi (both tried and failed measures) is utter nonsense. Woolmer seems clueless and is working on ‘we will see, who we can fit where’ strategy. I think they need to persist with Imran Nazir atleast for the next two games, if he fails kick him out. Maybe Younis Khan should open with Nazir and Hafeez should drop down the order but opening with Afridi, Akmal or Malik (was never comfortable opening in the past) is just not on

The Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer said they may open with Kamran Akmal instead of Mohammad Hafeez to strengthen their batting order in the second match against Ireland on Sunday. The opening combination has been a worry for Pakistan in the last few months and they tried as many as nine pairs in the 20 matches leading up to the World Cup.
Imran Nazir scored 6 and Mohammad Hafeez 11 as Pakistan were beaten by 54 runs by West Indies on March 13. “Maybe Imran Nazir will continue to open, maybe Kamran Akmal could open and Hafeez will drop down,” Woolmer told Reuters. "We have to try and mix and match the team so we have eight batsmen and six bowlers.
“The point is if you play Kamran in that position we need to fit in one other opener.** When [Shahid] Afridi comes back maybe he will open :smack: **.” Akmal went in first in four ODIs on the tour of South Africa and scored only 22 runs.
Afridi, who is serving a four-match ICC ban, will be available for selection after the Ireland game. Pakistan are also missing Abdul Razzaq, who pulled out due to injury, and Woolmer said resources were being stretched.
“This is where someone like Razzaq would be good but we can’t deal with things we haven’t got,” Woolmer said. “I’m sure Shahid would also be useful to us but he cannot play until the Zimbabwe game. So we have to deal with the team we have. We are very fluid but most of all we have to make sure that we get our strategies right on the field.”

Sorry I am too frustrated to make sensible comments…

Re: Pakistan look set to repeat past mistakes

seems like Woolmer wants to make sure that we never get a decent opening pair, how many more experiments he has planned for the batting lineups

Re: Pakistan look set to repeat past mistakes

well atleast now we hold a record for most # of openers tried for a country :snooty:

Re: Pakistan looks set to repeat past mistakes

woolmer is an idiot...thats my 2 pence

Re: Pakistan looks set to repeat past mistakes

i dont know

no one expected Pakistan to win the world cup in 1992 or make it to the finals in 1999

so who knows.....

Re: Pakistan looks set to repeat past mistakes

*Ummm...I expected Pakistan to win the 1999 WC. What the hell are you talking about? They were HOT favorites to win that tournament.

Woolmer is an idiot if he sends Akmal to open again. A tried and failed formula since last year.*

Re: Pakistan look set to repeat past mistakes

some sections of pakistani press have already said woolmer has taken all of his luggage and stuff with him when he left pakistan last! perhaps this strategy is why!
