Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

KARACHI, 19 April(Online):Pakistan yesterday launched its first locally designed car and joined an elite group of 16 countries to achieve the feat. A large number of car lovers, dignitaries and the officials of the manufacturing company attended the launching ceremony.

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz presided over the launch ceremony of the new economy car, designed and assembled in Pakistan but powered by a Chinese-made engine.

“This is a red-letter day in the history of our manufacturing sector,” Aziz said at the roll-out ceremony of the 800 cc Revo, designed and assembled by Karachi-based Adam Motors.

“With this, Pakistan has joined the club of 16 countries having the capability of designing an original car,” he said.

The 800 cc Revo is being assembled at a plant in Karachi owned by Adam Motors. The company plans to make 5,000 of them a year. The engines will be built by China’s Wuling Engineering Company.

“We are getting the technology from China and we will soon start building the engines also,” Adam’s Chief Executive Officer Feroz Khan said. “It will be fully indigenous in a couple of years.”

The four-door car will cost about 300,000 rupees ($5,000). The first models are expected to go on sale in June, he said.

The same category of Japanese cars that currently dominate the country’s roads cost 315,000 rupees, the company said.

Speaking at the Karachi plant, Aziz said Pakistan is expected to produce 141,000 cars this year compared to only 30,000 a couple of years ago.

When asked how he felt driving the newly launched vehicle, Aziz remarked that “it was a very good experience and was easy to drive.”

He said people in Pakistan needed reasonably priced and fuel-efficient transport. The Revo can also be fitted with CNG equipment. “The newly launched vehicle has all the plus points that the people look for,” Aziz added.

Sindh Governor Ishrat-ul- Ebad Khan also test-drove the newly launched car with Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim sitting next to him.

atlast a local brand from Pak, though not engine yet, but step in the right direction. its better than just assembling japanese or korean car and pay franchise rates to them.

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

Why are they calling it a Pakistani design while at the same time saying that they are getting the technology from China?

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

Styling, may be. Its an important part of the 'design'. The engine may also be 'designed' in one country, while built in another. Toyota, for example, is a Japanese designed car, whether it is built in Japan or America.

Come on!! I know they wanna keep the prices low and everything… but this is just wayyyyy too simple. Atleast give a radio and tape, guys!

More pics available at www.adammotor.com including their Zabardast Jeep (I am not kidding, its the name of their jeep)

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

baby steps…good stuff. :k:

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

3 lakh. That seems reasonable. Faisal, give them some time. They are just starting out. Hopefully the middle class will have the money to afford these kinda cars. Maybe they can charge extra for the stereo and all the other features.

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

thats strange to see a/c is standard on all models but no audio in basic model. I am sure they have the perks in medium to top spec models.

the odo meter look like its BMW mini inspired, instead of three separate, the included all in one round one. good budget car, if the engine from china keeps running well.
otherwise it will go down with time if not reliable.

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

why would anyone buy this if the japanese import is only 15k more? anyway I hope you guys have more roads than India did when the cars became cheap.

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

Hey this is really cool, and a supremely better name name than those darned Marootis they have in Indoland.

Atlantis, you probably flunked Math coz the actual diff is about 50K, which is a lot for a middle class family in Pak.

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

No audio is no big deal. My dad bought a brand new Mercedes-benz back in the 80s, and though that was a luxury car it didn't have a radio in it.

In fact, Mercedes-Benz only started including standard radios on its base models in the 90s.

Otherwise, like this Adam car, they just had a storage bay in a slot where you can install a radio if you wish.

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

this has been quite interesting and indeed a huge step.
the Adam jeep has been on the roads with a silent unpublicized presence for about a year now and it looks pretty ok. with the Revo Adam have formally launched their brand.
the Revo looks a bit like the Hyundai Santro from the bonnet front. the shape isnt bad at all. and the price they say of similar japanese models costing about 315000 must be that of the Suzuki mehran. the revo looks bigger than mehran, and while 315000 is for the most basic version of the tiny light and almost designless Suzuki mehran, ppl end up spending around atleast 400000 on the basic most car present in Pakistan, adding in the much sought aftre CNG kits and optional players and ACs which are not installed in the models starting around 315000.
the Revo's quoted price for starting models is Rs. 260000, with roughly another 40000 one can have a CNG, Player and AC and drive out all done in 300000. i'd say quite some diff.
now all thats reqd is for Adam to sell trust and make the economizing, reluctant, skeptical and low financed consumer and prove he wont feel sorry going for their make.

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

isn't that hollow place on the left of the steering wheel for the tape?

as far as i know none of these cars (like suzuki) come with a tape

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

really? ok:rolleyes:

as to the Maruti comment, I understand your jealosy.

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

I wouldn't wanna get into an accident in one of these!!! ......... Not a bad first start... although it came 20 to 30 years too late...

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

oh give me a break,
Maruti started assembling suzuki’s only after it was success in Pakistan. only difference is in Pakistan its Name is suzuki but model names are local ie, mehran, bolan, ravi, khyber etc.

so dont jump about maruti, we have been doin this thing long before you even dream about it. so its no way we are jealous about maruti.

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

Agree!

Proton of malaysia introduced its own brand in 80’s or 90’s . they had huge success and guess what , they even own a very special breed of cars Lotus is owned by Proton.

its a first step and thining out of the box of assembling every single japanese cars like we are doing it since many years, i;e suzuki, toyta’s, nissan, hondas etc.

people on idividual basis has been trying to design and make cars in Pak, but this will give a headstart to start something which can survive with a strong industry group behind this venture.

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

The road test will show.

NSU a powerful german company went bankrupt after making the Ro80, first ever wankel powered production car, it had to replace the rotor casings due to chatter marks like crazy - hence losing all the way.

Lets see what happens here.

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

totally phat gaye kya!..:rotfl: you are the one that brought up Maruti…

… Blueberries may help…

Re: Pakistan launched its first locally designed car

oye useless ..s maruti is local name of suzuki in india. and it only started production when it was already a success in Pakistan, and its not an indian car anyway apart from its name.
