Pakistan IT industry grows manifold in 2007

The size of the IT industry in Pakistan has grown manifold, and besides Karachi, a good number of IT companies are operating in Lahore, Islamabad and some other major cities of the country. Chief Executive Officer of NetSol Technologies, Salim Ghauri said in a statement here on Wednesday, “**Out of 1056 IT companies, over 100 companies are ISO-certified and the industry’s total size, in terms of volume has crossed the mark of $2 billion and its exports are close to touching $100 million”. **He said 2007 registered robust growth in IT sector of Pakistan. Starting with a comparatively slow pace, it gained momentum gradually to compete internationally.

Salim Ghauri said that the workforce involved in this sector has crossed the 100,000 mark and an impressive number of foreign qualified youngsters are aggressively returning Pakistan to tap the potential of the sector. He said that every growing industry, anywhere in the world, comes across with issues like resource management, adding that pace of growth in Pakistan’s IT industry is much higher than the number of IT professionals being produced by the universities and colleges. “We can be facing a critical situation, in case academic institutions are unable to provide sufficient number of IT professionals,” Salim Ghauri warned. He said that both Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) and Ministry of Information Technology have chalked out an Internship Programme to meet the industry’s demand of human resource. PSEB is also investing to assist IT companies in certifications, including CMM and CMMI levels. It has allocated sufficient budgets for this purpose and efforts would start showing results in the next three years. app

Mashallah. IT exports have quadrupled under President Musharraf’s govt. from just $25 million when he took over from Nawaz Sharif to $100 million now and growing.

Pakistan strides through Dubai IT Expo-2007

ISLAMABAD: An international IT exhibition at Dubai has proved to be another significant platform for Pakistani companies as it helped them a lot in increasing interaction with the world IT companies and high-profile individuals. The event called ‘Gitex Dubai-2007’ also provided a potential opportunity to our companies to make great inroads with numerous companies and trade facilitation bodies from different parts of the world. Pakistan Software Export Board along with a delegation of ten-member companies participated in the Expo. The board set up a Pakistan pavilion, which was totally customised. The pavilion consisted of individual booths for the exhibiting companies and one common meeting area for all the companies.
