Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state - Noam Chomsky

Noam Chomsky, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said Pakistan is now in danger of collapsing, with a rebellion in Balochistan, the FATA territories being out of control and unrest in Sindh because of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.

ISLAMABAD: Noted philosopher and political activist Noam Chomsky has said Pakistan is a “paradigm example of a failed state” that has undergone an “extremely dangerous form of radical Islamisation”.

The country is now in danger of “collapsing” as it grapples with rebellion, militancy and extremism that is “getting worse” and the assassination last month of former premier Benazir Bhutto might increase unrest in Sindh, Chomsky told the Business Recorder newspaper in an interview.

Asked to draw a parallel between the situation in Pakistan and the characteristics of a failed state highlighted in his book “Failed States”, Chomsky said, "I’m afraid to say Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state and has been for a long time. It has had military rule, violence and oppression.

“Since the 1980s, it has undergone an extremely dangerous form of radical Islamisation, which has undermined a good part of the society, under the Zia-ul-Haq tyranny.”

He further said: “Now it is in danger of collapsing, there is a rebellion in Balochistan, the (Federally Administered Tribal Areas) territories are out of control and always have been – and it is getting worse. It is possible that the Bhutto assassination might increase the severe unrest in Sindh, where there has been plenty of oppression, and this may lead to another secessionist movement.”

Recent surveys had shown that the Pakistani people are “in favour of democracy, possibly with an Islamic flavour” but “those hopes are not even near being realised in the existing political and social system”, Chomsky said.

Asked about solutions for Pakistan to become a true democracy, Chomsky felt democracy could be achieved only by “developing political and social arrangements in which the population can actually determine effective policy”.

Chomsky, a fierce critic of American foreign policy, pointed out that Pakistan’s alliance with the US “has been quite harmful throughout its history”.

He said: "The US has tried to convert Pakistan into its highly militarised ally and has supported its military dictatorship.

"The Reagan administration strongly supported the Zia-ul-Haq tyranny, which had a very harmful affect on Pakistan, and the Reagan administration even pretended they didn’t know that Pakistan was developing nuclear weapons.

“Of course they knew, but they had to pretend they didn’t, so that Congress would continue to fund their support for Pakistan, for the army, and for the ISI, all part of their support for the mujahideen in Afghanistan, which was not intended to help the Afghans.”

While pointing out that Pakistan could become a true democracy, Chomsky said the country could move to the level of India. "I mean there is a lot wrong with India, horrible things in India, but it is more or less a functioning democracy. Pakistan could move to that level, but, I think, it has to disentangle itself from the domination from the US.

“Right now the US is supporting (President Pervez) Musharraf - is that a way to democracy?” he asked.

Asked if democracy in Pakistan with an Islamic flavour would be acceptable to its Western allies, Chomsky replied: “It doesn’t matter if it’s acceptable to the Western countries, what matters is what is acceptable to Pakistanis. The Western countries would like to rule the world, but they have no authority to do that.”

Oyey denada....being an indian refrain from opening such topics.

Re: Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state - Noam Chomsky

Yes there are in this World of ours TWO States formed almost within one Year of Each other....1947/1948.........Both on the Basis of Religion......Both are Nuclear Powers.........Both have Fundamentalist and Extremists Religious Groups Vying for Power..........and Both are Supported by USA............Question is which one will survive?

Re: Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state - Noam Chomsky

I dunno...when I think 'failed state' I think of places like Somalia, Haiti, Afghanistan, Myanmar, etc...and the situation in Pakistan, though far from ideal, is nowhere near that level of dysfunction...

Re: Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state - Noam Chomsky

^^^ right answer, and if any country going to be failed state, by now Pakistan would have collapsed if these statements were true.

Re: Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state - Noam Chomsky

Chomsky makes some points BUT is glossing over the main cancer and culprit that has caused the failure namely overly religious zealotry amongst the masses of Pakistan.

You think the jihadi nuts, the govt goons and the military carpet baggers can carry out their agenda of loot and destroy without the sermons of the religioso to keep the people believing they have to put up with such rape of the country in the name of islam?

Re: Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state - Noam Chomsky

Cuba has been a failed state for years too right??

Re: Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state - Noam Chomsky

The dictator is running Pakistan into the ground :(

Re: Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state - Noam Chomsky

Which dictator are you talking about? The one elected through a 'WILL', or the *'alleged' *dictator - elected by the elected Parliament? :)

Re: Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state - Noam Chomsky

Is “Will” dictator ruling some country already? Aalsi, you never cease to disappoint people :k:

Re: Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state - Noam Chomsky

Chomsky does make good points, I agree but Baluchistan "rebellion" is not a "militant" rebel anymore (or so I believe). The danger is mainly in FATA which has "upgraded" from pistol-making industry to 'suicide-bomber' making industry.

If you go to Karachi for example, you will see hundreds of "madrassahs" who are hosting people from NW/FATA as their students but are feeding on donations from Karachi people in the name of "yateem bachon ki ta`leem".

Re: Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state - Noam Chomsky

I think Americans should add a subject "Pakistan failed state" to their slybus. They seem to be obsessed with Pakistan being failed state.

The fact Pakistan is not a failed state. you only find that out when you visit Pakistan, our country is much better then other countries....start respecting it people!!!!

LONG LIVE PAKISTAN..........INSHALLAH
