India and Pakistan must complement each other - Miandad
Javed Miandad, the PCB director-general, has said India and Pakistan should back each other in terms of cricket in the wake of the recent Mumbai terror attacks. Pakistan, he said, were keen to play in India and as a reciprocal gesture of goodwill, India should go ahead with their tour of Pakistan in January next year.
Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has urged India not to break cricketing ties with Pakistan, suggesting that both countries play a Test match in Mumbai, to show solidarity after the recent terrorist attacks in the city.
Cricket great Zaheer Abbas fears his country will be left in the international sporting wilderness if India refuses to tour in January for security reasons.
“I think the Asian countries which are part of the International Cricket Council (ICC) should stand united in this hour of need and should continue playing the bilateral series,” Abbas said. The Pakistan Cricket Board is also considering an option of shifting the January series against India to a neutral venue in case.
Strongly reacting to reports linking Mumbai terror attack to Pakistan, former skipper Rashid Latif on Monday said their cricketers should boycott the IPL and ICL even as pace legend Wasim Akram felt the sport could be a platform to dispel the growing tension between the countries.
He also advised the Pakistan Cricket Board to stop pleading with the Indians to send their team to Pakistan.
“If they can’t come to Pakistan then we shouldn’t also go there for any cricketing activity. The security situation is the same in Pakistan and India,” he said.
I am at a loss, why in the world would Shoaib Malik say this?
He was also hopeful that England would return to India for the Tests which would not only “be a very good decision” but would also ensure that cricket continued, even during these troubled times.
I have absolutely no clue why Shoaib Malik would state that it would be a very good decision to have the tour continue. Indirectly, if he is looking to back BCCI’s decision of facilitating a test series in hope that they “may also” consider the Pakistan tour, then the statement does not make sense to me.
