Re: Pakistan in the news
my uncle told me this one joke a few months ago. he said pakistan was finally #1 in the list of most corrupted countries in the world ( i doubt that's true. but it's just a joke).. so atleast we won something.. and that too, he said, was probably by bribing the previous #1 most corrupt country to give us the #1 spot. lol :D
in an interview of the US presidential candidates for 2008 when asked what country they thought was the most dangerous, the majority said Pakistan.

Hello,
This is in response to your article on World’s Most Dangerous Destinations
http://www.forbes.com/2008/01/16/travel-world-dangerous-forbeslife-cx_rr_0117travel.html
I don’t really know much about Somalia, Sudan, Congo or Haiti, except for what little bits of new that usually come out for these places. Mostly negative news (Darfur, genocide etc). I guess thats pretty much true for Pakistan too for those who have no other source of info. Usually only negative news comes out for Pakistan, and thats a shame.
I live in the United States, but I am originally from Pakistan, still have a lot of family there and visit back as often as I can. Based on what I know about Pakistan, its absurd to think that Pakistan is at the same level as Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan, Congo, Iraq etc in terms of safety or dangerousness. No way. You can easily book a flight to Pakistan (unlike Iraq or Sudan, where you have to literally charter a plane). You land in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi and they are really nice airports with reasonably good service iand where you can expect to be treated fairly like any other major international airport. In the streets, no one will stab you (God willing). No one will blow you up. Shopping is phenomenal (as long as you know how to haggle and negotiate). Amazing food and restaurants and very pleasant and friendly people.
To rate a whole country as dangerous, just because some isolated northern areas are in a state of conflict is absurd. I can see the whole suicide bombings angle (50 suicide attacks in last one year), but still, as a country, especially larger cities and touristy places, are as safe as any other big city in the world.
Regards,

When we see something we don’t agree with, we should take a few moments to at least register our thoughts at the right place. Whether it will make any impact or not is uncertain. However, I encourage all of you, who have read this, have an opinion about this, and have a few moments to spare, to provide your comments to Forbes.net.

Faisal
please add on that by the same token after what we saw at virginia tech, and columbine etc, US can be classified as most dangerous.
not to forget the murder rates in places like detriot, camden, gary, compton and oakland etc.

Re: Pakistan in the news
Here is the reply I received from the author of the article. Nothing surprising, but at least you register your protest. Let me think what to say next. Meanwhile I encourage all of you to do your bit in improving the negative perceptions.

Faisal,
Thank you for your email. I can understand your frustration with the portrayal of Pakistan as one of the most dangerous countries. Please understand that these rankings are compiled by risk consultancy agencies, which look at a range of safety factors and issues. Corporations, governments and NGOs use their assessments to determine the safety of doing business or having staff members in these countries. While it may seem very subjective, or perhaps even inaccurate, we do try to make clear that the assessments are based on very thoughtful criteria.
Best,
Rebecca
Re: Pakistan in the news
