KARACHI: The hosts and two times gold medallist Pakistan will face Nepal, the last SAF Games runners-up, in the inaugural match of the IXth SAF Games Football Championship on October 7 in Islamabad.

The draws of the eight-day championship, also featuring defending champions Bangladesh, Maldives, Sri Lanka and India, were released on Monday by Agha Liaquat Ali, Secretary General of Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) from Quetta.

Since Bhutan stayed away from the competition, six teams have been grouped in two pools, as reported by ‘The News’ earlier. Pool A comprises Bangladesh, India and Maldives and Pool B consists of Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Final will be played on October 14.

On day first besides Pakistan-Nepal game, India will clash with holders Bangladesh in the second match.

After a day’s rest, Nepal and Sri Lanka will meet each other in the first match while India take on Maldives on October 9. Two more matches will be played on October 10; Pakistan v Sri Lanka and Bangladesh v Maldives. October 11 will be rest day, while two semi-finals will be held on October 12.

Another rest day will be on October 13, whereas play-off for third position will be played on October 14, which will be followed by final. Meanwhile, coach John Layton informed that so far 19 of the 32 probables reported to captain Javed Zia, Camp Commandant while seven players from Pakistan Army were yet to join the camp, established at the Jinnah Sports Complex.

“The Army players, who were involved in Inter-Services Championship, are expected to reach Islamabad today (Tuesday),” hoped Agha Liaquat. But Layton said that whether Army players report or not he would wind up the trials today (Tuesday).

“The final list of 20 players will be named on Wednesday,” he said firmly, adding there would not be any stand-byes. He said his deputy Siddique Shaikh, coach from Habib Bank, resumed his duty on Monday morning in place of Akhtar Mohiuddin, who was dropped from the camp by the PFF. He said that as per his information, Muhammad Idrees of PIA was not appointed as coordinator as captain Javed was doing that work.

I hope the selctors select ONLY the best because Pakistan has some TOUGH competition mainly current champs Bangladesh and runner-ups Nepal. Inshallah our team will do well and win gold for the 3rd time!

Please keep us update about this.
I hope they will at least Bangla.
I wish i could support Pakistan at WC......just a dream.

Unfortunately that is one of the only MAJOR world sports Pakistan has never even qualfied to QUALIFY for the WORLD CUP! Well our Bangla bros might get far in the next WC but I doubt they will win with all the football countries such as England, US, Brazil, France and many other countries who have the $$$$ to actually have facilities and have many national tournaments, equipment and promotion of the sport in Bangladesh, whereas it is 10x worse for Paksitan because the lack of funds gaven to the PFF has caused the promotion of the sport to be pretty much zero and even though we have won the gold in the SAF GAMES 3 times that is only the South-Asian games whereas we weren’t playing with any football ginats

sadly its true

Yeah the problem is these countries need support from Europian and south American soccer teams.

They are ready to play against Israel but can't try to "force" Asian to play against them. There is such huge talent in Pakistan waiting for the right oppurtunity to arise but...........Look at Japan. They have made good progress and could beat the Brazilian U21 team!
We have to take JAPAN as good example. These are people with full determination and coordinated system.
