KARACHI: The hosts and two times gold medallist Pakistan will face Nepal, the last SAF Games runners-up, in the inaugural match of the IXth SAF Games Football Championship on October 7 in Islamabad.
The draws of the eight-day championship, also featuring defending champions Bangladesh, Maldives, Sri Lanka and India, were released on Monday by Agha Liaquat Ali, Secretary General of Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) from Quetta.
Since Bhutan stayed away from the competition, six teams have been grouped in two pools, as reported by ‘The News’ earlier. Pool A comprises Bangladesh, India and Maldives and Pool B consists of Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Final will be played on October 14.
On day first besides Pakistan-Nepal game, India will clash with holders Bangladesh in the second match.
After a day’s rest, Nepal and Sri Lanka will meet each other in the first match while India take on Maldives on October 9. Two more matches will be played on October 10; Pakistan v Sri Lanka and Bangladesh v Maldives. October 11 will be rest day, while two semi-finals will be held on October 12.
Another rest day will be on October 13, whereas play-off for third position will be played on October 14, which will be followed by final. Meanwhile, coach John Layton informed that so far 19 of the 32 probables reported to captain Javed Zia, Camp Commandant while seven players from Pakistan Army were yet to join the camp, established at the Jinnah Sports Complex.
“The Army players, who were involved in Inter-Services Championship, are expected to reach Islamabad today (Tuesday),” hoped Agha Liaquat. But Layton said that whether Army players report or not he would wind up the trials today (Tuesday).
“The final list of 20 players will be named on Wednesday,” he said firmly, adding there would not be any stand-byes. He said his deputy Siddique Shaikh, coach from Habib Bank, resumed his duty on Monday morning in place of Akhtar Mohiuddin, who was dropped from the camp by the PFF. He said that as per his information, Muhammad Idrees of PIA was not appointed as coordinator as captain Javed was doing that work.
I hope the selctors select ONLY the best because Pakistan has some TOUGH competition mainly current champs Bangladesh and runner-ups Nepal. Inshallah our team will do well and win gold for the 3rd time!
