The Rediff Interview/Prof Bharat Karnad

** ‘We are great at fooling ourselves’

An NBC report quoting intelligence sources as saying that Pakistan’s nuclear arms are greater than India’s in number, sophistication and delivery systems has sent shock waves through the country. But Professor Bharat Karnad feels vindicated. A security affairs specialist at the Centre for Policy Research, he has been crying himself hoarse that India’s nuclear arms are not just insufficient to match China but are probably incapable of matching Pakistan too. **

In a brief interview to Amberish K Diwanji, he explains his position and his fears about India’s nuclear arsenal and its strategic weaknesses. Excerpts:

First question. Are Pakistan’s nuclear weapons superior to what India has?

I have been saying this for almost two years, since the May 1998 tests. The case I am making is that unless we test, and do so repeatedly, we will not be able to have deployable or usable weapons. We will have computer-designed weapons which can be exploded in computer simulations. But that is not the same as the real thing. Without physical testing, we will never know whether our nuclear weapons work.

We don’t have that amount of data, especially on the thermonuclear device. The one thermonuclear explosion we had was a fizzle, which has now been admitted by our top scientists like P K Iyengar. So what data do we have for the thermonuclear weapon, which is a decisive weapon in any nuclear arsenal?

And I have said that if we don’t test more, not only are we going to be no match for the Chinese, but we will find it difficult to match even the Pakistanis when it comes to deployable arms. After all, the Chinese have conducted some 50-odd tests and have a whole battery of data to use for comparing their computer simulations and to constantly upgrade their weapons.

Good news. But I hope we never have to use the nukes.

You can only paint with the colors you're given...
...so get what you like and like what you have.

abdali you forgetting isreali input and they are far ahead of chinese.

Israel is far ahead of China... that is news to me!!! A country that is yet to conduct a nuclear test and has all but U.S. made nuclear warheads, better than a country is one of the world's next super powers, and conducted over 50 nuclear test. And btw, if war breaks out, don't expect Israelis to come to ur help... 'cause they won't, they are more responsible than that.

PT.

Be careful of Indian disinformation. That is just as dangerous as India having more nukes than Pakistan, as it lulls everyone into a false sense of security.

I for one do not believe this report, Israelis or no Israelis.

look guys americans r also spreading disinformation!

Thess are from your article gali kay guando,
**
"Also working in Pakistan's favor is the nature of the terrain along the Line of Control, which generally favors the defender."

"While Pakistan's military is smaller than India's, the gap is narrower in the parts of its armed forces that are best at projecting power, especially armored and mechanized army divisions."

"Zinni said that in his experience, the Pakistani army is skilled at maintenance and ingenious at manufacturing needed parts."

"Indian warplanes, for instance, lack all-weather capabilities."

Talwar:

Stop quoting numbers. They give us all a headache and make us draw conclusions we don't want to draw.

Otherwise we'll pass a law and make 29 bigger than 100.

Its not a matter of how many bombs India has, its a matter of can they be delivered...
And if they are delivered, will they work? According to some its a 1 in 3 chance. Pakistan may be outnumber in the number of nukes, but how many do you need to destroy Delhi or any other Indian city for that matter?
Pakistan delivery system has become quite sophisticated and very much capable of hitting anywhere in India. This should make Indians stop and think for a second.
As for Israel... They will not have time to send over any new technology considering the Indian attack will be within a few months assuming there is one. Within that time, no country will be willing to supply India or Pakistan with new anything. So you can hope and pray the Israelis help you, but they wont be able to anything. They have their own fish to fry.

Everybody is a military strategist and an atocmic scientist these days! Adnan, you forgot to mention another point of failure: what happens if Vajpayee has arthritis and cannot press the button? you forgot to mention that. On the other hand Pakistan has voice activated switch right? So Musharaf needs to simply say the word. Quite advanced.

But ISI has to watch out for two things though:

  1. Musharaf doesn't get a sore throat with all the speeches and CNN hearings Iyup, they're no longer interviews) he's having to give these days. Voice has to be intact!

  2. Mulla Omar and Osama don't decide all of a sudden that there are better use for that arsenal

Im only saying one thing, no reason to get all defensive Phd Shaib. India can have a million nukes, and where would they fire them, all they need is three or four for our major cities, same goes for our country. And as for the liklihood of the nukes detonating, its the same for Pakistan.
Im not sure what India has at its disposal, but I do know that Pakistan has strong missile capability. Im just giving you fact not some whole new nuclear doctrine or someting. This doesn;t require a lot of brain cells. As for Israel, if you think they can come to your rescue, then thats your oppinions, but i dont think they logically speaking.
