US to provide $200m: Rood

PESHAWAR: Peshawar-based US Consul General Elizabeth H. Rood has said that US government would provide $200 million to the Pakistan government for rehabilitation of the flood victims and reconstruction of the infrastructure damaged due to flash floods.
The US helicopters saved 8,000 people stranded in the flood-hit areas in Swat district and shifted them to safe areas.
The US government would continue to help the people of Pakistan in this difficult hour.
She was talking to mediamen after having aerial view of the flood affected areas and inspection of the Chakdara bridge repaired by the Pakistan army in 21 days time in Malakand agency on Friday, says a press release issued here.
Elizabeth said the US supported Pakistan in war against terror and would continue to help the people affected by the floods in Malakand as well.
She said the 12 readymade bridges have been handed over to the KP government.
The consul general assured that the US teams would remain in the area till their presence was necessary.
The US government has provided $35 million before the flooding and construction work on 108 schools is in progress.
Brigadier Saeed Ahmed Nagra briefed the US Consul General about the relief and rehabilitation activities underway in the area.
She was told that the rains played havoc in lower Swat district as 11 main bridges, 40 per cent agriculture crops, over 2,000 houses destroyed in the floods. 67 people died and 99 received injuries in the lower Swat.
The US Consul General took by surprise everyone present when she gave interview in Pashto to a foreign Pashto Radio at Chakdara.
Her Pashto ascent was excellent, commented the interviewer.
A spokesman for the US Consulate told that the Consul General can speak Pashto very well and there was no need of interpreter.
The US delegation also refused cold drinks due to Ramazan. - APP
