Hey everyone,
I was born and raised in US and have visited Pakistan many times. However, I realize that my grandparents won’t always be there for me to provide us a place to stay.
I don’t want to lose my connection to Pakistan, and I always want to keep going back there . I really like going there for prolonged periods like three months, etc. I could stay with my many aunts and uncles and they would be very happy to have me, but I really want another “home” there, where I can have some privacy and visit relatives at the same time.
I was thinking of buying a flat there- but my parents tell me how its not safe, because other people “qabza” it, and etc.
Are there places in Karachi where that doesn’t happen? I’ve heard Defense is relatively safe- but I’m not sure.
Thanks, Choti jaan
PS- I also posted this in the business section of GS- but that place seems slow, so I also posted it here.
If the place where you buy "flat" is sort of 'deserted' area then chances of it getting into hands of 'qabza group' are higher otherwise an apartment should be okay.
its not just qabza group but also if there is vanadalsim or damage due to leaking water because your neighbour uptairs or next to you has not figured out the need for shower curtains, then you are not there to see it.
secondly, how often will you be going and for how long?
if its a couple of weeks every couple of years you are better off doing one of 2 things, getting a hotel, or doing a short term lease on a furnished flat, you will have to find the companies that do it, but expats who are coming in for 1-2 months are able to get those, usually its for short term businessmen but it would be worth it.
^^ wrong.. don't mislead provide reference.. My whole very big family live in Pakistan.. more then 40 people i know moved back after 9/11.. .none of them have this kind problem? .are we exceptional ?

living their permanently is different than buying a place and living in it for few months / years.
Some apartments/houses of people I know living abroad are okay, no one lives in there, no "chowkidaaar" or special security.
this some represents a majority of how much? we ourselves almost lost our house back in 2000. my father had to go to pak and sell it since there was no one to look after it. true that if it happened to us doesn't mean it can happen to anyone but same can be said about the other side. its better to be safe than sorry. property costs a lot in pak and you don't want to risk you investment by losing it.
the qabza threat will always be there but what you can do is buy a flat and ask your relatives if they can help in renting it out to someone while you are away...they can collect the rent and keep an eye on it....but they should be close relatives, otherwise they might "qabza" it themselves :)
