Afridi, Pakistan hit in pocket for slow overs

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has been fined 20 percent of his match fee and his team mates will lose 10 percent for their slow over rate in Saturday’s 11-run win against Sri Lanka, the ICC said on Sunday.
          Match referee Chris Broad imposed  the fine after Pakistan were one over short of their target at the end  of the match in Colombo when time allowances were taken into  consideration, the International Cricket Council said in a statement.
According to the ICC Code of Conduct governing minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fail to bowl in the allotted time while the captain is fined double that amount.
          "The penalty was accepted by Pakistan without contest so there was no need for a hearing," the ICC statement read.

          Having beaten Kenya and Sri Lanka, Pakistan take on Canada in their next Group A fixture on Thursday.

Colombo: **Pakistan were fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their 11-run win against Sri Lanka in the cricket World Cup in Colombo.

ICC Elite Panel Match Referee Chris Broad imposed the fines after Shahid Afridi’s side were ruled to be one over short of target at the end of the match on Saturday when time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with ICC Code of Conduct regulations governing minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.

As such, Afridi was fined 20 per cent of his match fee while his players received 10 per cent fines, an ICC release said.

The offence is contrary to Article 2.5.1 of the code which relates to minor over-rate offences. The penalty was accepted by Pakistan without contest so there was no need for a hearing.

Don't they have stadium lights. These kind of idiotic rules need to go away from Cricket.

So what if they have stadium lights? Does that mean the players can take forever? The captain can take 10 mins before every over to set his field since the lights are going to be on all night long?

You need to have a lowest overrate that a team needs to maintain. They do have a little flexibility. It's only when they are well off the mark does the captain gets penalized. Nothing wrong with it.

during the game i saw afridi yelling at players and pointing at his watch. guess he knew he was slow.
well not a big deal. bade bade games me choti choti baate hoti rahti hai

afridi is not that bad at all.. almost every captain has gotten fined for this at some point..

punter is a repeat offender.. he has been wasting way too much time giving lectures to bowlers before each spell.. and then later he has to resort to deploying part timers like hussey to catch up with the overrate haha....
