The Muslim-majority state of Pakistan might be eyeing a race on
the steadily globalising Formula One calendar, new reports appear
to indicate.
About 40 delegates inspected Bahrain's new grand prix circuit near
Sakhir last week headed by Pakistani ambassador Sabih Uddin
Bokhari.
Circuit designer Hermann Tilke and his company's project
manager Rizwan Mumtaz made a presentation to the delegation,
sources continue to report.
Pakistan, with a population of 153 million, is neighboured by Iran,
China and Afghanistan and is locked in an ongoing dispute with
India over Kashmir.
China and Bahrain will join the Formula One calendar in 2004
pending final circuit inspections early next season.
this would really be a great initiative. If only there was also a paki driver, this could turn into a great investment
gr8 news :k: but even if there was to be a paki formula 1 driver, our desi chooza would come last cos of the state of engines produced in pak, i don’t think he could even complete a lap in paki made car
we would have to look abroad for a better car model and a better engine and dats a shame cos pakistan need to start producing quality products so we can improve our ailing economy
A driver doesn’t have to use cars of his/her own country. They use the cars of the constructor (e.g. Ferrari, McLaren) by whom they are hired. It could be a company belonging to any country.
It seems everyone is trying to cash in on the F1 scene these days. Somehow I just can't see Bernie Ecclestone (Mr. F1) agreeing to a race in Pak... what with all the security issues that go with staging a sporting event in Pak. Even if it goes ahead, I can just imagine the pre race pit areas with the traditional litter of scantilly clad F1 babes ... only this time dressed in head to toe burkhas!
The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu, considered by many to be a very forward thinking minister in India, took a delegation with him to Monza earlier this year to see F1 at first hand. He is hoping to bring F1 to India in Hyderabad within the next 2 seasons. There are additional, separate, proposals being put together by consortia of businessmen in Bombay and Bangalore to bring F1 to these respective locations.
I think there is more chance of F1 coming to India than to Pak... but lets see.
the article was about a Pakistan thinking of hostign a Formula1 event, not racing in it. Pakistan does not even have a car of its own…what makes you think pakistan is trying to race.
Yeah i dont think Pakistan will be allowed to hold a race. For reason number 1, all the security concerns and lack of facilities.
Reason number 2, even if the Formula 1 authorities are trying to have a race held in South Asia, India will always get chosen…
If a place like Dubai…lost the chance to hold a F1 race, what makes u think Pakistan will win.
a country not haviong a car of its own is a non-issue. would anyone like to name other countries that have hosted F1 and have no car produced in their country in the race? :) not a very tough task for true F1 fans.
Now whether or nto F1 will choose Pakistan is a different question, and I dont think that they will. security, lack of support for sport in teh country, prices for tickets local endorsement costs etc will be major factors, and the same factors apply to other countries discussed.
The good thing is that theya re exploring new options. some may nto work, some may work, some would be long term targets
This comes as a surprise to me. But anyway, if true, I think its a long long long way away. I think Russia only JUST got a permit to host F1. Those guys are very choosy about everything. We’ll need to be realistic. I don’t know if there’s much of F1 following here.
PS: Does the source page load for anyoneof you? I am getting errors.
i know dat! i wrote this response cos nescio wrote that it would be good if we had a paki formula 1 driver so this response was to answer his point of view not be in place of it get it!!! peace
