If Pak wants these intrusions to end, then it better arrest or kill the Taliban/al-Qaida fighters who are launching cross-border attacks in Afghanistan. Making comical deals with terrorists who deny what was agreed to or not agreed to isn't going to cut it. Terrorists need to be in jail or dead. Otherwise Unkil won't be satisfied.
Besides, the fact that this has happened so many times that too in populated areas show that this is deliberate.
The Waziristan area bordering Afghanistan is a loose border, thanks mainly due to the rugged terrain. Its prolly difficult to distinguish where Afghanistan ends and the lawless Tribal Area starts. If im wrong correct me.
Good point, but the Pakistani government has already sorted out this issue, when the violations started happening. There is a Joint Pakistan-US-Afghanistan commission which has defined the border and could easily draw a line and say where US troops can and cannot operate.
I dont think we have guaranteed safety of US troops entering our land from the Afghan side. If they are ambushed or killed, they should what they are getting into.
Again I agree, in normal circumstances, but consider a worst case scenario, US troops "get lost" in Pakistani territory get killed or captured. In most cases a rescue team would quickly react and it is hard t say where they would stop to get their men back. Consider then what would happen if Pakistani troops not knowing who has crossed the border attack the US force? While it is easy to say at the senior level Bush or even Rumsfeld wouldn't allow the troops deeper in, on the ground it is harder to predict what could happen.
These civilian folks are helping our military boys catch the bad guys.
I think you have to remember the priorities of the Americans, their priority is the capture of UBL and co ONLY, I doubt they are interested in what could happen to pakistan as a result of going in all guns blazing. they didn't care in the 90's or the 70's so why should they now? The US has a habit of using pakistan and dumping Pakistan when it's fulfilled it's own security priorities.
Still, what do you think our response should be to these incursions? Im sure our military commanders are in touch with their US counterparts in Afghanistan and relaying our concerns.
From what Khurshid Kasuri said on CNN, it seems the US commanders are least interested in the governments concerns. There are multiple options, joint patrols and better co oridination, but in the run up to a US election, neither Kerry or Bussh is concerned with resolving the problem.
