i’ve been watching the news and morning shows and today’s announcement by Shahbaz Shareef about the discovery of huge reserves of iron, copper, silver and gold near Chiniot, Punjab has been talked about everywhere.
Shahbaz Shareef is very optimistic and happy to have found these reserves and he claims that this find is a game changer in Pakistan and how it will remove poverty from the country and how this will really break the “Kashkol Culture”. he seems to be very upbeat about it.
i hope that Shahbaz Shareef is right in what he said about the discovery today.
these reserves will not be misused by the politicians to get richer? hat do you think?

why is it a big news today? what's new?
Chinese government has agreed to built a factory in Chiniot to process the Iron ore. why is the CM so upbeat about it if it's an old story?
The government keeps on beating the drums after signing MOU's, later things dont mov ahead. We have recently seen what happened in Gadani and some other power projects. As far as Chiniot is concerned I am sure I read about some minerals in the area in their previous tenure as well. Let them start the extraction and then we'd see..

Ok here’s a news of the previous year, it seems as if Punjab government had tasked the Chinese company to carry out feasibility studies, they have now come back with the quantity and quality of reserves.

ahaaN…so, if all goes well, do you agree with the CM Punjab that it will be an economic game changer and that it will break the Kashkol Culture? do you think the government is serious and sincere about what it says or is it just a crap that they are used to talk about?

Game changer I dont know, it all depends upon the quality and quantity of reserves plus if they are able to mine them.
a Lahore High Court (LHC) decision — reveals that the iron and copper reserves offer an epic story of greed, maladministration and incompetence on the one hand and hard work, honesty, resolve and single-minded effort on the other hand.
The Punjab Mineral Development Company, created by the chief minister under the chairmanship of Dr Samar Mubrakmand with a professional board of directors, was entrusted this task in 2014 after unsuccessfully struggling with different initiatives.
Leading entrepreneurial success stories namely Nooruddin Firasta (Rupali Polyester/Soneri Bank) and Anjum Nisar (ATS Group) were included in the board. The deans of LUMS Business School, metallurgy and mining departments, University of Engineering and Technology and head of geology department Punjab University were included in the new board.
The official said that this made the board an industry-academia-public sector nexus. The project strategy was revised by mitigating the risks of foreign companies without compromising national interests.
Request for pre qualification (PQD) was launched on October 28, 2013 through Financial Times (UK), which led to an expression of interest by 33 reputed companies in the shape of 12 international consortia.
Ultimately, the Chinese consortium of Metallurgical Cooperation of China (MCC) was awarded this contract through a competitive bidding process where the German consortia were the second and the third best bidders. The MCC is a Fortune 500 company, listed in the international stock market. Its annual turnover is more than $34 billion.

yes, so far, looks good. i hope when the time comes for extracting the ores/minerals, they will invite tenders from international companies and they will not sell out national interests in exchange for hefty kickbacks.

Errr...not gonna happen....it is for opportunities like these they are in politics... its time to cash in.

the previous article mentions that the project had been handed over to another company in 2007, so yes the government had some idea of the resources, maybe the details were not known then.

you are justified in taking the whole thing with a pinch of salt but give SS a benefit of doubt. may be he is a changed person now after soaking his feet in the flood waters. let's hope for the better.

One can hope; but this is once in a lifetime opportunity. Even Kerjiwal would want some action.

lol...yeah, why not? i think if foreign companies are inted to bid, i'm sure Modi will come with goodies...may be another shawl for Mrs Shareef and one each for the entire shareef Khaandaan members. hehe :D
