Unfortunately in India, some rabble-rousing molvies have made this an issue less about feeding the body and more about feeding the ego. Their argument is like this:
“Allah has allowed us to eat/kill cows, why should we care what the kuffars believe.”
This, in turn, pi**es off the devout Hindus, who demand that this practice be banned.
