Pakistan defence budget in last 5 years seen declining
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan defence budget expenditures during the last five years is seen on the decline.
Available government data show that a sum of Rs194 billion was allocated from a total budget outlay of Rs902 billion in 2004-05, while in 2008-09 out of total budget outlay of Rs210 billion, a sum of Rs296 billion was allocated for defence. During the last five years, the defence budget ratio to government expenditures declined by 7 percent, as it worked out to only 15 percent declining from 22 percent of the total expenditures.
Former Finance Advisor, Dr. Salman Shah said that the cut in defence expenditures aimed at more cost-effective utilization of the fund. He said that the defence budget didn’t include armed forces retired employees pension funds, as it was not part of the defence budget.
International sources said that US thus far provided $10 billion to Pakistan for defence purposes, while the former finance advisor insisted that $10 billion was not the US defence aid, it was actually paid on account of the war on terror expenses incurred by Pakistan, which in fact quite higher than the amount paid.
Prime minister’s finance advisor, Shaukat Tareen said that the allocation of defence budget would be increased in the next national budget in view of the ongoing tensions at the borders.
To get the correct picture one need to compare the defence budget of any country with respect to it's GDP, i.e. what percentage of GDP is spent on defence, army etc.
To my understanding Pakistans budget is high compared to it's total GDP, which is not a good sign. Hope Pakistan has some solid reason to justify the high defence allocation and it's not another case of misplaced priorities.

When you got so many enemies around and with in, you need to invest more in your defense. Hopefully they will increase defense budget in the coming years as Pakistan is fighting so many anti-Pakistan movements.
Re: Pakistan defence budget in last 5 years seen declining
Pakistan needs to remove the Army from the civilian sectors
The Army can increase its fighting potential by reducing the salaries of these generals and the % they get when they negotiate deals with foreign weapon contractors such as the Ukrainian Tanks they got 1995 for 300 million dollars
I think half the defence budget is going towards the salaries and staffing for the personal care for the army brass
Re: Pakistan defence budget in last 5 years seen declining
There is a very high proportion of staff level officers vs junior officers. It gets even worse when comparing junior officers to NCOs, JCOs and jawans.
Re: Pakistan defence budget in last 5 years seen declining
well mercenary! this is the only point where me and u agree. well yes the salariz of generals must be shortened and defence budget must be increased to have a weaponry and armour potential against US, NATO, INDIA AND Other western terrorist countries who are eying on Pakistan's nuclear weapons to destroy it.

Don't worry the defence budget has not been decreased .... this is just financial jugglery to show Pakistan is not spending too much on defence forces. However the fact remains that over the years defence outlays have incerased.

Sure we can talk about proportion also ..... India spens 2% of its GDP on military expenditure ..... while as Pakistan spends 4.5% of its GDP on defence !!!!!!
