DHAKA Jan 10; **Sarfaraz Rasool powered Pakistan to a 1-0 shock victory over favourites and defending champions India in the opening match of the South Asian Footbal Federation (SAFF)championship on Friday.
Sarfaraz capitalized on Qadeer Ahmed’s cross from right to score the winning goal in the 49th minute of the preliminary Pool A league match at Dhaka’s Bangabandhu National Stadium. **
The win was Pakistan’s first against India since a 1-0 victory in the 1995 South Asian championship in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Pakistan rattled India with repeated attacks in the second half.
India’s veteran striker I.M. Vijayan got an opportunity to score the equalizer in the 70th minute when he received a lob from the midfield inside the penalty box. But he wasted the chance by shooting wide.
India was playing without four key players, including star striker Baichung Bhutia, who were sidelined from the tournament due to injuries.
**The 10-day tournament features eight countries in the region: Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan. **
Later in the day Sri Lanka edged out a battling Afghanistan to a hard-fought 1-0 victory. Afghanistan making debut in the comnpetition fought gamely but a Lincoln Stienwall goal in the 41st minute of the first half proved enough to give the Islanders maximum points.
There were no goals in the second half as Afghanistan defended well in depth and on counter-attacks had couple of chances to snatch equalizer and earn a valuable point.
Pakistan outplay Sri Lanka to progress ahead
DHAKA, Jan 12: Favourites India defeated debutants Afghanistan 4-0, while a spirited Pakistan beat Sri Lanka 2-1 in the South Asian Football Federation championship on Sunday.
Pakistan brightened their chance for a place in the semifinals with its victory against Sri Lanka.
After a goalless first half, Zahid Niaz put Pakistan ahead in the 48th minute with a fine header in a goal-mouth melee from a Sajjad Hussain cross at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
Sarfaraz Rasool netted the second goal for Pakistan in the 85th minute, capitalizing on a rebound shot by Shahid.
Toward the end of the match, Sri Lankan S.K. Weerasinghe found the net with a fierce shot from the top of the box, reducing the margin to one goal. His goal came minutes after Sri Lanka missed their first chance to score when a header from Kasun Jayasuriya hit the cross bar.
Pakistan need only a draw against neighbouring Afghanistan in their last group match on Tuesday to confirm a seat in the semifinals.
Meawnhile, striker Ashim Biswas scored the first goal for India in the 30th minute. Biswas found the Afghan net for a second time in the second half, and substitute Alvito D. Cunha scored two more secondhalf goals.
The win gave champions India three points for the first time in the competition. India suffered a setback after losing to Pakistan 1-0 in the opening match Friday.
Afghanistan, making their debut in the championship, looked in disarray in the first half. But their players - five based in Germany - found their rhythm in the last 45 minutes.
Indian goalkeeper Nazeem Akhtar beautifully saved a powerful shot from midfielder Omar Nazar just before the end of the match, in one of the Afghans’ few second-half scoring chances.-APP/AP
Pakistan defeated Afghanistan in their third and final pool match in the SAFF tournament by a score of 1-0 and clinched a semi-final spot by finishing top in pool A. Sarfaraz Rasul of Pakistan was on target for the third time in the tournament in the ninth minute of the game to maintain Pakistan's 100% record in the tournament so far.
In the final game of the same pool India and Sri Lanka fought to a 1-1 draw. Ashim Biswas put India ahead by scoring in the 88th minute, but seconds later A. Chrysantha equalised for Sri Lanka. The draw left India and Sri Lanka level on points (4 each) but India qualifies for the semifinals by virtue of a better goal difference.

Anywayz, I was wondering if anyone in 1989 went to see Pakistan vs Bangladesh soccer match in Jinnah Stadium Islamabad??? I was there and so many people showed up despite soccer not being a famous sport, and when we won, we had so much fun! Our team was celebrating with the people
