Karachi - **Pakistan have reduced the powers of their captain after appointing a new selection committee in the wake of the team’s World Cup debacle.
***“We have curtailed the power of the captain in the sense the selectors will now finalise the playing XI for a home series,” Zakir Khan, director of cricket operations for the Pakistan Cricket Board, told Reuters.
“Previously the selectors used to select the 15 or 16-member squads and the captain and coach finalised the playing XI.”***
Pakistan appointed all-rounder Shoaib Malik as captain last month after Inzamam-ul-Haq stepped down as skipper and retired from one-day internationals after the team’s first-round exit from the recent World Cup in the Caribbean.
***Zakir said the captain would be consulted by the selectors on all matters but they would have the final say.
He added that a committee including the manager, coach, captain and vice-captain would select teams on tour, with the manager given more say on selection issues.
Zakir said the changes were made to give the selectors more responsibility and to ease pressure on the captain.***
The new selection committee, headed by former test player Salahuddin Ahmed, was named by the board last month after the previous panel quit.
Thank Inzi's dictatorial style of captaincy for all these new unnecessary intrusions (some may call them innovations) If Pakistan had made it to the semis atleast none of this would have come to pass. I see even better reason for refusing the captaincy now. Yes we don't want to see a spoilt captain but c'mon should the selection commitee be incharge of deciding the final playing eleven for every home game. If that's going to be the case then the selection committee also better take all the blame and flak for any future disappointing home performances. Malik should not be held mainly responsible for any home defeats now. The selection committee's job as I understand is to give 15 or 16 players to the captain and coach. This most definitely is a bit over the top

Its like saying to a cop, We will not give you guns and cars but you are responsible for all the crimes happening in your area and for captain its “khaya peya kuch nahi, glass tora barha (12) aaney”
Why the manager is part of this equation is beyond reasoning. The manager of all people adding his persuasions on the selection of Final X1 for away tours? Shouldn't manager be just that - a manager?

To add to the ingenuity displayed by PCB:
immediate next steps for PCB to assign jobs to **paid **selection committee that should be implemented 1 by 1:
SC travelling with the team on every tour and match.
SC deciding field placements
SC deciding batting order
SC deciding who opens the bowling.
SC making sure there is no over abundance of TJ 6 points.
SC holding pre-match meeting as well post-match debriefing.
I think in the end its the captain, who knows better who will be his best playing Xi as he'll be the one responsible for everything. So I think captain should have that power of selecting final XI.
Captain should decide the playing 11. This is ridiculous and I see it backfiring on the PCB. Change just for the heck of it doesnt necessarily mean its good. Wrong move.
You can all thank Inzi for all this ridiculousness. He is the aaloo who tarnished the role of captain. His poor judgment and biasness is now the stuff of legends.

PCB is also over-reacting and over-correcting. Captain is the one who has to fight the game in the field. He is the one who is arguably more in tuned with the tactics to be employed against the opposing team, as well as a better judge of pitch conditions. To make captain's role rudimentary in selecting the playing XI is not only unprecedented, but also foolish. There is a reason no other test playing country does that. I am sure PCB will learn this lesson as soon Shoaib Malik gets some proverbial balls after a few months into his new role.
So basically Shoaib will have to pay for Inzi's mistakes. I am all for reduce powers for the captain so he doesnt end up becoming a dictator but the playing XI should be of the cpatain's choice. He has to get that team out on the field and make them a fighting unit. He needs to have faith in the abilities of his players. The complete squad of 15-16 players should be picked by selectors with consultation of the captain but the final XI should be of the captain's choice.
What a ridiculous move by the PCB. The last time we won the World Cup under the MOST successful ever captain in the region, the captain enjoyed the biggest ever free hand and powers. The result was a winning team. Why go the opposite direction?
This is ridiculous. There is already a rift in the camp as reported by Jang. The news claims that Cheif selector Sallu threatened to kick Malik, Asif and Nazir on the basis of DISCIPLINE.... The players have decided to take this issue to higher authorities (which will be chairman ofcourse)
The bottom line is that there is lot of over-reaction.

Now, he can say selectors decided the XI and just focus on field leadership. He does not have to worry about pleasing every player or man to man mangement. Players know it won't work, all they have to do is play best to their abilities and win games to protect their position in the team. Let's just hope these selectors decide players on who is ready and prepared.
Everything and everybody has a high and low, our captain had his high now the selection committee seems to have their high that translates into reduced powers for the captain. Its all about performance, we tried the captains all supreme authority that proved to be a diseaster, lets try this new experiment...all supreme selection committee

This is not how "teams" and "leaders" are developed.
As far as player power is concerned, you think that players cant out-power the selection committee? can not put pressure on the committee? we have seen lot of it in the past. All needed was a message to 39 players "Her is your captain, you fit in with him or fk out"
Right now this is the way team and its leader should be build. This new team has no command, confidence and a leader. Shoaib Malik is a new kid in the block when comes to leadership. He has no experience, to put him in a situation of handling everything is insane. He can not do it and win us games.
PCB in the past has shown no sign of leadership. They have caved into senior and most influential players. They have to act like a board for once and tell these players that they are nothing but employees and if they do not get the job done than they will be replaced. This way you won't have another Inzamam or Wasim Akram. Remember when Wasim became the captain in such an early age with no experience surrounded by expectations? It not only destroyed team Pakistan but also brought one of the lowest point in our Cricket, where our players turned against captain. It was not all their fault becase Wasim also was in experienced to handle the situation properly. It is best we avoid that situation again. Moreover, the responsibility of training and preparing the best players rest with PCB now. No one can blame captain for unfit players anymore, which previous captains were unfairly blamed for.
Lets first see how Malik plays as a captain and player. We have not see how good of an eye he has when it comes to choosing players and his captain abilities. He can get all help he wants to groom and make the confident captain that we aspire him to be.
