Pakistan coalition has agreed to expel Musharraf

I hope this true. Once this dictator is ousted then the new govt will be able to focus on more pressing issues facing the country.

Pakistan coalition has agreed to expel Musharraf

LAHORE, Pakistan (AFP) — Pakistan’s ruling coalition has agreed to expel US-backed President Pervez Musharraf from power, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said on Wednesday.

Sharif said the widower of slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, Asif Ali Zardari, had agreed in talks on Tuesday to oust Musharraf in the wake of the coalition’s victory in February elections.

“I have spoken with Mr Zardari that we should throw him out to respect the mandate of the people of Pakistan, and he agreed yesterday to do so,” Sharif told a meeting marking the tenth anniversary of Pakistan’s first nuclear tests.

Sharif, the man ousted by Musharraf in a bloodless coup in 1999, said voters had given a “clear verdict” against Musharraf in the elections.

“Musharraf did not fulfil his promise to quit the presidency if people did not vote for his party,” he told the charged crowd in the eastern city of Lahore.

Sharif’s comments come amid divisions in the coalition over how to deal with Musharraf and over the restoration of top judges sacked by the president under emergency rule in November.

Zardari and Sharif met in Islamabad on Tuesday to discuss a package of constitutional amendments to clip Musharraf’s wings, but both sides are still finalising details.

Earlier this month, nine ministers from Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party quit the cabinet, which is dominated by Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

There was no immediate comment from the PPP. Zardari last week described Musharraf in a television interview as a “relic of the past” but did not make an outright call for his resignation.

Musharraf’s spokesman earlier on Wednesday denied rumours sweeping the country’s stock market that Musharraf had resigned.

“It is absolute nonsense, there is no such thing, there is no thing like this under any sort of consideration,” spokesman Rashid Qureshi told Dawn News television.

Sharif however called for Musharraf to be tried for sedition.

“There is no need to give safe exit to that man (Musharraf). He should be given same punishment which traitors deserve under the law and the constitution,” Sharif said amid shouts of “Hang Musharraf, hang Musharraf.”

The proposed constitutional package, which would require a two-thirds majority in parliament for approval, was launched by Zardari last week.

Re: Pakistan coalition has agreed to expel Musharraf

Right now it seems like great Zardari's first preference is to get rid of Mush, and Nawaz's first preference is to restore the judiciary. I think nawaz should change his stance and get rid of the dictator first!

I disagree, Zardari has been hesitant of taking head-on with Musharraf, he probably wants to make sure NRO is completely digested in the law/constitution before gearing up to take heads-on. From the article it seems that it is Nawaz who's urging Zardari in this direction. Nawaz has been wanting to restore judiciary so that judiciary cuts Mushy's wings and makes him accountable for his actions hence his very possible (in case of judiciary restoration) ouster/impeachment.

Well-placed political sources told TheNation that Asif Ali Zardari and Mian Nawaz Sharif have agreed on modalities of impeaching the President Musharraf with the former to do it without further delay while the latter sought some time.

The reason is obvious, Zardari cant bring back the judges before he does something about Musharraf. However, if the CJ comes back, it benefits Nawaz, as then the tamaasha starts, and Musharraf will face humiliation, legally.

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-N Chief, Mian Nawaz Sharif Wednesday said the time to bring revolution has come “because the February 18 verdict of the people has not been accepted.”

Addressing the a program marking the 10th anniversary of Pakistan’s emerging as one of the nuclear powers of the world here at Awan-i-Iqbal, he said President Pervez Musharraf had promised to step down in case the people’s mandate goes against him on February 18. But he failed to keep his word, Nawaz added.

“I have made it clear to Asif Ali Zardari that if the judiciary is not restored he would also join in the lawyers movement,” he said.

PML-N Chief said President Pervez Musharraf should be indicted on charge of treason. “There is no need for giving him a safe passage”.

** Pakistan People’s Party Co-chairman, Asif Ali Zardari has endorsed the action to remove President Musharraf, he informed, adding the people decided to bring a change in the country on February 18. “If I could, I would have removed (President) Musharraf on February 19.”**

Re: Pakistan coalition has agreed to expel Musharraf

It was long due.

Is the option of Safe exit still open for him? Can he be retired without humiliation?

I know the frustration his actions have caused the nation, but i don't think it would do the country any good to punish him in a cruel manner. Because again, it will be Pakistan as a whole that will be laughed at. Anything done to him, should be through a Just manner, and through the court. Before the very bench of judges he disposed, and i hope for the sake of fair judgement that they judge him based on facts and set aside personal grudges.

Has the coalition given any dates? :)

No freind the coalition has not given dates yet. I would expect at the latest he will survive until the Bush Administration does in Washington i.e. November.
If Mushy is smart he will make a run for it immediately. Once the Bush admin. goes he may face prosecution for sedition and treason considering he has admitted himself that he violated the contitution on numerous occasions.

I refused to read after this.

LOL. MALIK_786 bhaijan. Does this mean the Pakistani electorate now has to wait until Great President Bush of USA leaves the office? Whatever happened to the alleged mandate from he people to oust Great President Musharaf that people keep quoting? The electorate will not be happy. :hehe:

Re: Pakistan coalition has agreed to expel Musharraf

Was Zardari himself quoted saying all that?:)

If no, then, Zaradari naY bahut khoobsoorati kaY saath aik daffa phir Choonaa lagaa diyaa...

Aasli Bhai (aka Reza Pahlavi). Unfortunately mera bhai in Pakistan the peoples mandate comes third. First is Americas mandate and second is the Armies mandate. But dont worry inshallah Mushy bhai will be charged with sedition and treason by the end of the year - and will serve the appropriate punishment. After all he has admitted in his own words that he violated the constitution of Pakistan.
I would implore whoever is moderating this discussion to avoid modifying my posts. The fact that Musharraf is liable to a treason charge is not my opinion or desire, its simple fact. He has admitted to violating the contitution and the punishment for that is a treason charge.

MALIK_786 bhaijan. Don't let the Electorate hear you say that. They will be very disappointed. :( :)

Aasli Bhai. Dont worry the electorate may soon get what they want

“They are working out the final modalities,” said a military official, who would not give his name because he was not authorized to speak to the media. “He is working to get a guarantee of safe passage out of Pakistan.”

So Great USA has given green light to get rid of Mush? I thought we had to wait for Bush to leave office before this could happen? :hehe:

As long as he’s gone who cares if he goes befor eor after Bush leaves office? The man has done enough damage already.

But but, I thought it was only because of Bush, Mush was in power?

Re: Pakistan coalition has agreed to expel Musharraf

However true or untrue this maybe, A question arises, and this has been circulating in the news as of last 24 hours as well:

Should Musharraf and his "partners in crime" be put on the ECL? (Exit Control List)

Why and/or Why not?

Re: Pakistan coalition has agreed to expel Musharraf

This is good, I was actually thinking he'll get away easily if he resigns now, and et a safe passage, but it seems like yeh zaleel ho kar hi jaye ga iqtedar sey...

MALIK_786 bhaijan. Hedging your bets I see. :)
