QUETTA, Pakistan - Seventeen minority Hindus were killed when their temple was hit by rockets during fighting between renegade tribesmen and security forces in a restive tribal town in southwestern Pakistan last week, a government official said Monday.

The fighting in the town of Dera Bugti erupted Thursday after the tribesmen allegedly attacked a convoy of pickup trucks carrying paramilitary troops along a mountain road.

Officials have said up to 45 people, including eight soldiers, were killed in the clashes between the Frontier Corps troops and Bugti tribesmen, who dominate Dera Bugti.

It was an alarming escalation of a low-level rebellion in Baluchistan, the country’s poorest province, where tribesmen are demanding more returns from the natural gas extracted from their territory and resent the army’s moves to set up garrisons in the region.

Abdul Samad Lasi, the top area government administrator, said 17 Hindus were killed in the fighting and a temple was destroyed.

“Both sides were shooting at each other. It is difficult to say whose fire destroyed the temple,” Lasi told The Associated Press by satellite telephone from inside a base at Dera Bugti, where government officials and paramilitary troops are surrounded by armed tribesmen.

On Sunday, Awais Ahmed Ghani, the governor of southwestern Baluchistan province where Dera Bugti is located, said some 300 troops and government officials are holed up at the base. Helicopters were airlifting them supplies.

balochistan is unofficially world center of attention as there r many parties involved..locals and foreign agencies too...new groups have now come...
really things r getting worst....and responsible for this situation offcourse governments as balochis have been ignored and became sandwich between government and sardars...only way of solving matter is assurance of jobs,safety of their culture etc..also i strongly believe some foreign hands r trying to problems..these must be deal strictly

1 thing tht must be note and infact most interesting point is tht there r always some "unknown" groups tht create problems....hamid mir of jeo has written quite an interesting article...infact these groups are helped by anti paki elements to create problems..when there was a chance of peace,suddenly clashes between army and balochis started....infact hamid mir also wrote same abt wana,saying tht both army and "mujahiddins" were reached on agreement but some elements came forwward and destroyed everything ...for proving his point,he gave example of killing of mufti nazim shmzai who was an extremely powerful alim of muslim world and had strong control on mujahiddins,he wass abt to leave to wana so things could remain peaceful and "mujahddins" should remain calm and coperated,terrorists killed respectable mufti....so wht i wanna say,there r many elements trying to create problems in wana and balochistan and these problems r not local problem but infact international problems

Most neutral reports say that the government forces lobbed several mortar rounds into the temple and the market next to it.

Link to your sources please? On google news most of the reports are suggesting that the temple was hit by rockets, not mortars.

At any rate, once every generation or two some of the Balochi tribes get uppity and try to commit treason.

The Musharraf regime is being much more restrained than previous Pakistani governments - the last 3 times the Balochs got full of themselves, the army was unleashed on them immediately.

Given the recent tension, I wouldn’t be surprised if the army is let of the leash in the next 2 weeks. The Balochi problem will be resolved by the end of the year inshallah, and the traitors will be dead. We’ll get about 10-15 years of peace then the idiots will start the cycle once more and will have to be fixed.

I heard it twice on Monday morning (US time) on BBC from its reporter there at Dera Bugti.

Nawab Akbar Bugti has used rocket and mortar interchangeably.

You think if our government wanted to kill Hindus like how your government killed Muslims, it would have waited for the Balochistan disturbance to happen to do so?

Even a kid can understand that the Hindu temple came in the middle of crossfire and that is why it became the target. The loss of innocent lives is extremely sad, no matter which religion those ppl belong to, but why are you trying to present the news in the wrong way? You’re trying to turn this news into propaganda to further your own agenda. That’s shameful.

Every eye witness there says that FC forces fired multiple times into the Hindu Mohalla.

Where did I ever say your government has tried to “exterminate minority Hindus?”

All I said was that the temple was fired upon by government forces which even your government does not deny

Pretty clear.

The Hindus built their temple near Nawab Akbar Bugti’s fortress. Bugti is a leader of the traitors. Bugti’s men won’t let Pakistani soldiers close enough to fire directly and accurately at Bugti’s fortress. Pakistan’s army therefore had to use an artillery barrage to fire at Bugti’s house. Artillery is less accurate than direct fire. There were some Pakistani hindus who fell victim to collateral damage during the barrage.

The interesting thing is that Pakistan is being much less careful about collateral damage in Balochistan than it was in Waziristan. In Waziristan, Pakistan did not use heavy firepower until after several days of requesting civilians to leave.

Unlike Waziristan, in Balochistan it looks like the gloves are off; Pakistan is not going to pull any punches. The Waziristani traitors were given days to prepare for attack while Pakistan waited for civilians to leave … it looks like the Balochi traitors won’t be given that luxury.

Yaar. The Balochi tribesmen surrounded and Ambushed them… The battle lines are drawn here. They had to do what they had to do.
Again, the govt is trying to have a political settlement.
