Re: Pakistan Cinema Revival?

In order to get the film industry rolling, movies that are cashing in on the "hot" factor, whether due to being a mimic of indian or hollywood movies (ex. waar, yes waar) are the way to go for now.

The industry has to get a jump start because it's been dead for so long. Government is not investing in it much apart from ISI's investment in Waar. So to get a cash flow going, popular commercial movies ARE needed. And I'm glad to see it. At least this way a viewership base will be established (regular movie goer crowd), and this will in turn give incentive to make more cinema halls.

Right now even with new cinema halls popping up, numbers are still small compared to how big of an industry this COULD be. Fact is most people will not go to a movie theatre even now, with new nice theatres being built.

Once theatres are more widespread, more artistic and off-beat films will be made and will do well. Because there will be theatres to show them in, and a steady movie-goer crowd that doesn't think this is all gasp haraam.

Re: Pakistan Cinema Revival?

It will pick up steam. There was a time in the 80's where Pakistani fashion consisted of bright awfully matched colors and too much hairspray and a magazine cover from Pakistan paled in comparison to one from India.

Now look what's happened. Even the Indian crowd is wearing Pakistani type fashions, and their designers now look to our designers for originality. Not always, but it's happening.

Same goes with our music industry. It started with vital signs, boys in jeans and cheaply shot videos with college girls wanting some attention playing the models. Now look - the videos are WELL DONE, and the music is great.

Part of it requires a venue for advertisement. With the internet and decent good websites that people will go to that advertises these trailors, there is hope. There were REALLY AWESOME Pakistani music websites, and that's why Pakistani music got steam. Because it became easy to download and listen to new artists, and all of a sudden underground artists that PTV wouldn't give any attention to, came to the forefront.

I don't know what's going on online, but we need more GOOD WEBSITES, that are high quality websites, film blogs, music blogs, etc.

And the revolution is already being seen at the college/vocational school level. There are places in Karachi for sure you can take film classes. It's all amateur even now, but things have to start from somewhere.

Re: Pakistan Cinema Revival?

It's rather interesting, or should I say naive, to expect the audience to go to the movie theater to watch mediocre films in a post-globalized world where movies, far superior in production value, are readily available either by legal or illegal means for their viewing pleasure.

Re: Pakistan Cinema Revival?

That's the thing. Bollywood produces brain dead cheesy comedies like Yeh He Jawani every week, and most Pakistani audience have access to those movies. So what's the point of making Pakistani audience two years just to show case blatant copy of those movies. As if they're really missing out on something. Bollywood is just right next door, so let's not pretend Pakistani audience are dying to see such commercial rip offs.

Re: Pakistan Cinema Revival?

If you put a oscar winning type film in front of the aam public of Pakistan they still won't watch it.

Hindi movies are appealing because of all the skin that is shown, racy topics, the near kisses, and make-out scenes, etc. And the bonus is that no one has to feel bad about watching it, because it's not some innocent muslim girl being made to do such things. They're mostly hindu, so they deserve to be watched voyeuristic style.

I find it funny that if Pakistan makes a similar type movie and a girl shows skin in Pakistan, then people are all up in arms. Meanwhile no one is making fast moves to ban Indian movies in Pakistan.

Re: Pakistan Cinema Revival?

Hindi movies are soft-porn for the average lower middle class/working class (which is the MAJORITY of Pakistani public) film-goer. Hence why these movies do really well in Pakistan. And they'll never be replaced by Pakistani movies, because those same guys will feel guilty watching a muslim Pakistani girl gyrating and doing the same moves that Hindu actresses do.

Re: Pakistan Cinema Revival?

Is that good or bad for Pakistani film industry?

Re: Pakistan Cinema Revival?

Hindu or Muslim or whoever, bollywood produces the most obscene and vulgar films in the world promoting rape culture. There was a UN report against them. If our film makers are going to follow in their footsteps, I would rather such an industry shut down for good.

Re: Pakistan Cinema Revival?

Maybe they should make a lot of comedy movies; it will help us with the sense of humor.

Re: Pakistan Cinema Revival?

yes, comedy is our forte. we have some of the best gifted writers and comic actors.
