pakistan bans 22 nov. newsweek

may those who bought the newsweek for a chance to see more ‘flesh’ have their eyes burned out. i know how pakistani mentality is. they have no shame when it comes to watching porn. once i told a friend that i saw a porn magazine lying in the street while i was going to jumah, he asked me why didnt you keep it? i said i was going to a masjid, he then said well why didnt u hide it under a rock so you could take it when coming back from the mosque. i was just speech less. and i m sure a whole lot of public in pakistan has such a mentality.

The latest issue of US news magazine Newsweek has been banned in Pakistan for publishing material that “desecrates the Koran”.

A district magistrate in the capital, Islamabad, ordered all copies of the 22 November issue to be destroyed.

The issue contains an article about murdered Dutch film-maker Theo Van Gogh and pictures of a woman with Koranic verses inscribed on her body.

Islamic parties said the article showed Western bias against Muslims.

Controversial film

Magistrate Tariq Mahmood Pirzada said the article, Clash of Civilisations, “contained some objectionable remarks which are tantamount to desecration of the Koran”.

Authorities said they were considering legal action against the publication, although they gave no further details.

The ban may have little effect on sales - the 22 November issue has already been superseded by the 29 November edition.
**
An Islamabad vendor told Associated Press Television News the 22 November issue had sold 50% more than other editions of the magazine.
**
The Dawn newspaper said the article was a “naked attack on Muslims’ faith. It hurts the feelings of over a billion inhabitants of this Earth”.

Van Gogh, 47, had made a controversial film critical of Islamic culture.

Intended to illustrate domestic violence in Muslim societies, it featured images of Koranic verses daubed on semi-naked women.

He was shot and stabbed to death in Amsterdam on 2 November.

Several men, all believed to be Islamic radicals, have been arrested in connection with his death. The alleged killer is Mohammed Bouyeri, a 26-year-old Dutch-Moroccan.

Mosques in several Dutch cities have been the targets of vandalism and failed arson attempts since the killing.

im not condoning the murder of Van Gogh...but my point is

when you know something is going to hurt the sentiments of an entire population that follows a certain faith then why should u create something like that? theres a million other topics to make films on

like im a Muslim but i still dont think its a good idea for a Muslim to make a film lets say making fun of Hindu dieties...b/c its gona hurt Hindus..

i feel like ppl who do this, like Salman Rushdie, are jus trying to get attention or incite sentiments...

as for the keeping away of the issue of newsweek...im completely in favor of our decision to ban the issue...its something sacriligeous so why shud it be allowed to circulate in our society? sure, keeping it away wont change anything but atleast ppl will be kept away from getting offended/hurt/angry when they see those blasphemous images...

as for the conexion u're making b/w porn and those issues of the magazine...there is none... porn is bad, definitely...but these r two different matters altogether

Even before making that film he had expressed anti-islam sentiment. The guy, quite simply, hated Islam.

For instance, he was known for referring to Muslims as "Goat Fukers" (insert a "c" into the appropriate place)

sigh

that does suck..

i think sometimes though maybe if instead of going and killing him..if some Muslim had tried to befriend him, and show him that Muslims R nice, they r not bad, maybe then today even he himself would have been a Muslim..?

thats the route our Prophet (saw) had adopted...he tried to show kindness to the enemies of Islam..

i can understand the sentiments of those who have been enraged...but killing someone is not the solution..in fact thats going to create 10 more Islam haters..

hmm..lekin aik point ye bhee hae k we dont know who killed him...and even if it was a Muslim wat motivation that person had...thats only something Allah swt ..or that person..knows..

Irem, Good thing you don’t read newspapers and magazines otherwise you would have figured out that the killer is a Moroccan Muslim who was caught red handed.

In Pakistan, a few weeks ago they killed a Christian for using a Mosque’s bathroom, so sure they are not going to allow a magazine to be circulated there.

:jhanda:

What? Killed him for using the bathroom? Where, in Karachi?

Irem its called
freedom of speech or the right to express yourself.

Isn't this same as anti-abortionist killing doctors that perform abortions, or when the Jewish settler killed Yitzhak Rabin. So why stop now, this is only a movie director. Don't get me wrong it's horrible that people kill over difference of opinions but thats part of life. So I am sad at his loss, mad at the lost souls that commited the crime but no tsk tsk for either one.
As far as ban is concerned on the Newsweek Iguess see blue above doesn't apply yet to People of pakistan, how sad didn't expect that from General Sahib.
So I say this to you General Sahib "Break down those walls".
As in the walls of censorships.

Verizon bhaiyaa!! :D hmm..i dont think itni zaada freedom of speech honi chahiyay k u HURT someone else and religion aik aisi cheez hae k ppl do take it personally. u can have an opinion abt the weather or some tree, why do u have to have negative opinions abt someone's RELIGION and then on top of that rub it on their faces!!!

Madhanee :o im a busy gal na akhbaar shakhbaar parHnay ka time nai milta :D
dint hear abt this killing of a Christian in a mosque...hmm... :S
its posible there's more to it tho...its true that there might be some crazy ppl around but normally i doubt ppl would kill a Christian for using the restroom of a mosque

hmm..u sure? in this age of almost instantanous access to all kinds of information you still think he was "misinformed" abut islam?? i dont think so. knowledge is so common now days that to be ignorant about a religion that has 1 billion people world wide and is always on the news is not an excuse. he hated islam and muslims DELIBERATELY and that scum needed to be removed.

any how, i m not sure why 50% more copies were sold in pak, i was just guessing that ppl bought it to see some "flesh" but i m still not sure what other reason can any one have for buying a magazine that contains something anti islamic....other than some horny teenager who does not care about islam and just gets excited about a chance to see some naked bodies.

I doubt that mosque bathroom thing happened.

P.S. While this 1 chrisitan was killed the Americans have killed 100,000 Iraqis in the last year and a half, so its not just one side doing the killing.

Let's concern ourselves with what happens in our country, not what someone else does. If my son gets burgulary, I am not going to say "Oh well, the kid down the street has murdered people, so I guess no big deal"

Banning speech has never helped further the original intent behind the banning. The truth is that Muslims all over the world and especially in Pakistan abuse the Quran to justify the barbaric treatment of women.

Mithai Waley Log  So you’d rather live in a society that is not open towards its constituents and only provides news that it (regime) deems fit. :nono: swee…err ah …teee  I believe that one should come out of the mithai ka dubba and see the world, in other words be open to new ideas and listen to, what others have to say without being offended.

Edit: added more comment.
I have heard personally on number of occasions when Non-muslims have spoken negatively about Islam. My reaction is not to jump in and start defending Islam and berating them on throwing insults, instead I laugh at their ignorance and feel sorry for them. But I have never felt offended. I think the only time I felt offended was when 9/11 happened.

first these abuses must be stopped

No, human rights take 2nd place to that one article about that one director who made that one movie which no one really cared about until the Muslims raised a broohaha over it.

offcourse, the life and honor of muslim women are more respectful for us than any thing else that is why islamic sharia is the only solution that can punish these crimes and end the injustice.

This is what was posted by Lajwab in another thread, and I was trying to point out that while some Islami Police is busy pointing out that all western women are whores, our own sisters and daughters are being raped by our own Muslim people. Go figure. Wonder what Lajo has to say now.

:jhanda:

Elahi, yeah, one way of making oneself feel better is to totally deny that these things happen in the Islamic Republic. :jazak:
