Tanvir Ahmed not picked for World Cup

Pakistan have retained the ODI squad picked for the tour of New Zealand for the World Cup next month, with the exception of fast bowler Tanvir Ahmed. **However, they haven’t yet named a captain or a vice-captain for the tournament. Mohammad Yousuf, who represented Pakistan in the ODI series against South Africa in November, despite speculation of a possible return to the international fold, was ignored. **
Kamran Akmal, who returns for the ODIs against New Zealand, is the first-choice wicketkeeper while Shoaib Akhtar, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul and left-arm seamers Wahab Riaz and Sohail Tanvir form the pace attack. Abdur Rehman, the left-arm spinner, who was Man of the Match in the first Test against New Zealand in Hamilton, has been picked alongside offspinner Saeed Ajmal. Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad are opening options, while Misbah-ul-Haq, Younis Khan and Shahid Afridi add experience to the batting. Middle-order batsman Asad Shafiq, who has done well in the five-day version, has also been retained.
Ahmed had a good first Test in Hamilton, picking up four wickets in the first innings, but Pakistan chose to go in with two left-arm pace options. The six-match ODI series that starts on January 22 will be an ideal opportunity for Pakistan to test its World Cup squad, though in significantly different conditions.

^ Under the circumstances a good and balanced squad. Yousef should have been recalled. His class and experience is too important to ignore. Not sure whether Shoaib Akhter should have been in the squad.

Why not yousuf and why tanvir is selected rest squad is fine :jhanda:

Afridi should be the captain unless butt loses his brains and makes misbah the captain

Thats a good selection....only dispute would be the selection of Ahmed Shehzad instead of Yousuf...I doubt whether we would need Shehzad.....the final 11 should look like this...

Gives good batting depth and bowling resources...3 fast bowlers - Shoaib, Gul, Razzaq and 3 spinners...Rehman, Afridi, Hafeez.

If Yousuf was around he could have swapped places with Misbah...but still I think its a good unit.

Also, good to see they have persisted with Asad Shafiq.

Opening slot looks good without salman butt. Shoaib akhtar is a gamble again as the team looks minus one always

Yousuf (if fit) should have been recalled in place of Misbah or someone else but Misbah was included to keep pressure on Afridi :rolleyes:

u need big players on big matches. Even to date, there is no other batsman in the team who can keep one end safe and still score on decent pace.

^^ the thing is for WC, most any one should be able to score on subcontinent pitches...all you really need is good player of spin and not take pressure....
Misbah - MoYo is now on the wrong side of Igaaz butts...and I think board has opted Yk over him since both can't play together....ego issues...

It looks like a weak batting side, esp under the circumstances when our batsmen lose wickets so irresponsibly, no name in the team is there that can be totally reliable.

I think we do need Misbah because he is in such great form right now (albeit in tests). Misbah can play big shots in ODIs. If anything I w’d have replaced Asad Shafiq with Yousuf. A World Cup is not the time for experimentation

I am unable to understand why they are taking Asad Shafiq in ODIs ? He is nice player of Test Matches but can't be successful in ODIs .

I hope he takes his form to ODI against credible opponents and yeah I agree with Asad replaced by Yousuf but I believe its matter of YK or MY and MY is on the wrong side ...for now...

Yousuf hits 2nd 50+ (with the help of 1 six and 4 fours) score in a row in National ODI tournament ...proving that he is not only fit but in form too. Pitty that Butt sahab/pcb decided to drop him for out of field reasons...
