LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday announced the names of 35 probable players for the upcoming England tour, dropping former T20 skipper Shahid Afridi, opener Ahmed Shehzad and middle-order batsman Umar Akmal from the list.
Afridi had resigned from captaincy after Pakistan failed to put up a decent show in the World T20 in India, but announced that he would continue playing international cricket.
Former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq-led selection committee was in Faisalabad monitoring players’ performances during Pakistan Cup and shortlisted the names of 35 performers.
Those shortlisted include players from the Pakistan international and ‘A’ sides.
“We are scheduled to play only six or so T20s in the coming year so we thought it is better to give chance to youngsters,” Inzamam said at a press conference. “In the meantime, Afridi will also get some time to rest and hopefully will regain his form.”
Pakistan cricket’s troublemakers Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal have been also axed from the tour probables.
“Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal had discipline issues and their performances weren’t up to the mark either,” Inzamam said.
The selection committee has informed the PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan regarding the shortlisted players and it is likely that Afridi won’t be selected for the team’s training camp either.
Afridi, commenting on the list of probable players announced by Inzamam, took to Twitter and said: “Appreciate the approach by selection committee; happy that youngsters are getting a chance.”
The swashbuckling all-rounder added, “I am going to play County cricket this season and will try to prove my fitness [and] form and make a comeback.”
Afridi played his last Test in 2010 and resigned from one-day internationals after the World Cup 2015 in Australia.
Pakistan will start their England tour with the first Test scheduled on July 16, which will be followed by three more Tests, five ODIs and T20.

A good start by Inzi dropping Afridi, Shehzad and Umar from the squad.

Re: Pakistan announce probables for England tour; Afridi, Shehzad and Umar Akmal drop

Good job Inzi. There shouldnt be any compromise on discipline no matter if we even lose all matches. I'm sure we have some hidden gems which will shine if unearthed.

Good on him. These chawals should be permanently banned for discipline charges.

Re: Pakistan announce probables for England tour; Afridi, Shehzad and Umar Akmal drop

No Fakhar Zaman? Should have kept Irfan as he would be handy on English pitches. Glad Butt was not chosen.

Re: Pakistan announce probables for England tour; Afridi, Shehzad and Umar Akmal drop

BTW I cannot understand , how selector can drop a player based on discipline. Selectors need to be pure technical and selections should be based on technical grounds. In cse some players are involved in disciplinary mis conduct , board should ifrom the selectors from beginning not to consider these players for selection until goahead is not given. Now as the selectors taken this resonsibility , how he will assure that discipiline of these players ( shahzad and akmal ) is improved.

Re: Pakistan announce probables for England tour; Afridi, Shehzad and Umar Akmal drop

Cannot understand how can you imply this. He will not have to work on discipline. He got manager and coach's reports on player's performance/attitude from Board on taking responsibilities as chief selector.

Re: Pakistan announce probables for England tour; Afridi, Shehzad and Umar Akmal drop

I believe what he means is that as a "selector" it should not be his responsibility to drop player based on 'misconduct or discipline', the list that is given to him should not have players found short of discipline/conduct.

Re: Pakistan announce probables for England tour; Afridi, Shehzad and Umar Akmal drop

Exactly. This is good for selectors to perform their job better

Re: Pakistan announce probables for England tour; Afridi, Shehzad and Umar Akmal drop

Which list and who gave him that list? What is on media is he observed players and prepared list himself.

Btw, from above news "their performances weren’t up to the mark either."

Re: Pakistan announce probables for England tour; Afridi, Shehzad and Umar Akmal drop

I agree with Ehsan. Fakhar Zaman should have got included amongst probables. He deserve that on his Pakistan cup performance.

I do not think selectors should work on given list. Actually, as selectors, it is their responsibility to make list and then further make short list of players they want to consider. There should be no list given to them by administrators or anyone (though in Pakistan, nepotism and corruption means that happens).

Actually, selection should be job of selectors, no one else, and they should have freedom to select players from all players available, that is all. Further, it is responsibility of selectors that players chosen is not only competent in game but are fit to play and have discipline too. Selectors can also take into account age before selections.

Only requirement should be that if their is any dubious or questionable decision, they should put forward valid points on making their decision. No one would (nor should) question selectors if they drop players on discipline, bad fielding, fitness, competence, age or whatever ... as long as their selection is on merit, applicable to all, has some basis, and explanations/reasons given if questioned..

I think it is time that we should start discouraging nepotism, corruption and interference by management in Selection of team, as selection of team should be complete responsibility of selectors (that is why they are called selectors), without any interference from any quarter, including PCB Chairman, Captain or Coach ... as long as they can justify their selection (justification is required, so that there should be no hint or chance of nepotism or corruption ... and one can see merit is observed).
