“Our foreign policy is one of friendliness and goodwill towards all nations of the world”, said the Father of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam Mohamad Ali Jinnah. His words have defined the spirit of Pakistan’s foreign policy since its creation in 1947. Peaceful coexistence and friendly relations with all members of the international community have been the guiding principles of Pakistan’s engagement with the world. Our foreign policy has pursued the ideals of international peace and cooperation, respect for the UN Charter and international law, support for the right to self-determination, peaceful resolution of disputes and global disarmament in order to produce a secure, just and peaceful international order.
In the pursuit of peace and stability in the region, Pakistan has always striven to cultivate friendly relations with its neighbours.
At present, Pakistan is engaged in a full spectrum Dialogue Process with India with an open and constructive spirit. Pakistan believes that the overall peace, prosperity and stability of South Asia hinges on normal and friendly relations between its two biggest countries through the resolution of all outstanding issues.
Pakistan is committed to warm brotherly relations with Afghanistan with which it sees its destiny closely interlinked through myriad bonds forged over centuries. The continued instability and elusive peace in Afghanistan have hindered the progress and prosperity of the entire region. Pakistan, which has hosted millions of Afghan refugees since the days of Soviet invasion, desires lasting peace in Afghanistan and has aided all regional and international efforts towards that end. A peaceful, sovereign and prosperous Afghanistan, Pakistan believes, can be a cornerstone of peace and prosperity for South and Central Asia.
Pakistan enjoys close and brotherly relations with Iran which are built on the bedrock of historical ties of faith and culture. The two countries are pledged to reinforcing their relationship by expanding their bilateral cooperation to all fields of mutual interest.
Pakistan’s time-tested and all-weather friendship with China continues to flourish. Characterized by convergence of mutual interests and a shared outlook on all regional and global issues, Pakistan-China partnership has been a factor of regional peace and stability.
Pakistan’s cordial relations with the Russian Federation and the Central Asian Republics are marked by shared interest in promoting peace and prosperity in the region through building greater economic cooperation and interdependence.
Pakistan and the United States remain important partners in the pursuit of their common goals and are engaged in efforts to invest their relationship with greater trust and respect in the interest of their own, as well as regional and global security.
The cultivation of close relations with the brotherly Islamic countries has been an important aspect of Pakistan’s foreign policies. Pakistan has always stood for greater unity and cooperation among the Islamic countries to address their common problems and challenges.
As a responsible nuclear state, Pakistan supports the global objective of disarmament and non-proliferation on the basis of equality and partnership with the international community. Pakistan’s nuclear programme is purely for maintaining credible minimum deterrence.
Pakistan has been the frontline state in the global fight against terrorism. Its people and armed forces have made untold sacrifices in this struggle and their resolve remains unshaken.
Pakistan has played a very active and productive role in the regional and international organizations. Pakistan has been a robust member of the United Nations and its contribution to the Organization’s activities, especially in the field of peace-keeping, has been widely acknowledged and appreciated. Pakistan is also closely engaged with other important regional organizations including the European Union, Association of South East Asian Nations, Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
