Pakistan And The Creation Of Bangladesh
By: Dr Hasan-Askari Rizvi
The establishment of Bangladesh proved that a non-participatory and exploitative political order cannot sustain unity and harmony in a diversified state. What happened in 1971 was Pakistan’s internal failure. India exploited the situation to its advantage. Thirty-four years ago, on December 16, Pakistan’s state media informed the bewildered nation that the Pakistan military had surrendered to the Indian military in East Pakistan. The same evening Pakistan’s strong man, General AM Yahya Khan, chief martial law administrator, president and army chief, vowed to continue the war against India on the West Pakistan front and in Kashmir.
A day later, Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on this front, having lost almost 5,000 square miles of its territory to India. On top of all this, the Yahya regime had prepared a new constitution for united Pakistan which was partly released when the Pakistan flag no longer flew in Dhaka. The news of the surrender shocked the people in (West) Pakistan. The government had continued to claim until December 15 that the situation in East Pakistan was under control.
