pakistan - an oxymoron

was having a discussion with my friends and roommates about pakistan and the identity crisis most of our nation is going through back home. Some sugested that pakistanis in pakistan have taken their identity for granted and some suggested that pakistan has come under huge western influence wether that western influence be from hollywood or creeping into pakistan through Bollywood. But all of us agreed that ‘Pakistan’ could easily qualify for an oxymoron right now.

do you guys think so? or is it just us who have developed a conservative lifestyle in the west while our home becomes liberal.

Re: pakistan - an oxymoron

I am sick and tired of this "identity crisis" argument. We are a nation of 160 million. You will have ultra-conservative, moderate, liberal, ultra-liberal portions of society. Why is it that just cuz we are pakistanis we are to be a society where everyone holds the same values, norms, customs etc etc. In india you have the same groups of people. They too have the conservatives, liberals, moderates etc etc etc. But they don't sit around and bitch about the fall of their society just cuz some girl wears a mini-skirt. Only in pakistan will you get this type of fazool conversations.

Re: pakistan - an oxymoron

Puttar jee…there’s a big difference between us and Indians.

When comparing you should always compare yourself with a group that is in a similar scope as yours.

Re: pakistan - an oxymoron

you’re right. Akhir hum musalmaan hai.

If you mean what our religion teaches us than I will say to you what about those that don’t believe in allah. Are they not pakistani. You might be a hijaabi musalmaan but you have no right to pass judgement on a girl in defence who chooses to wear tight clothes. By you I don’t necessarily mean YOU but society in general. So don’t take my words personally.

And if you are not talking about how our religion sets us apart than accept my apologies and don’t bother replying to it.

Re: pakistan - an oxymoron

either you are saying

"Conservative Pakistan"

is an oxymoron ?

That can be true for respective areas/social circles where your friends and roomates belong to. There are many more dimmension other than you noted here .

Re: pakistan - an oxymoron

this seems to be the common argument these days with the thawing of relations of India, and the whole bhai bhai realtionship..My Khaloo in Pakistan was saying that with girls wearing jeans and “trousers” :hehe: and the actresses all going to India, Pak is going back to India
