Pakistan among top 20 happiest
countries, beating India, US: Report**

KARACHI: Pakistan ranked 16th among 151 countries of the world on the Happy Planet Index (HPI) 2012, beating India and the United States who ranked 32nd and 105th respectively. Costa Rica was termed the happiest country, followed by Vietnam and Colombia.

The Happy Planet Index was calculated using life expectancy, experienced well-being and ecological footprint (per capita) of the countries with data collected from various sources including UNDP and Gallup data. The index was compiled by New Economics Foundation (NEF).

The life expectancy and experienced well-being of Pakistan was found to be mediocre, but the ecological footprint was termed “good”. The total HPI of Pakistan was calculated to be 54.1.

Israel landed just one spot above Pakistan, having “good” life expectancy and experienced well-being, but a “poor” ecological footprint.

Bangladesh was higher up on the scale at 11, with the first two factors termed mediocre and the footprint as “good”.

India was found to have mediocre life expectancy and well-being and a “good” ecological footprint. However, its total HPI amounted to 50.9.

The only reason why the US scored low was its ecological footprint which was worse than the “poor” category. The life expectancy and experienced well-being were, however, ranked “good”.

Afghanistan was ranked 109.

The countries which landed at the bottom of the Happiness Index were mostly from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Denmark ranked the highest on the experienced well-being chart, followed by Canada and Norway.

Togo landed on the bottom of the chart.

On the life expectancy chart, Japan topped the list, followed by Hong Kong and Switzerland, while Sierra Leone gained the last spot.

Afghanistan had the best ecological footprint among all the countries, followed by Haiti and Bangladesh.

The countries with the worst ecological footprint included Qatar, Luxembourg, Kuwait, UAE, Denmark and the US.

Is it April Fool today?

“Happy Planet Index” — which planet are they talking about? Well…give me a break, let me laugh my heart out — after all we are the 16th most happiest lot :omg:

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

The whole calculation is flawed. Ecological footprint is “good” because there’s no electricity, no infrastructure, etc. and not because people are happy.

Shhh..Don't tell the Pakistanis this or you'll get lynced.:)

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

i’m SAD today because we are NOT happier than Pakistanis :frowning: :cb:

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

Maybe they took this survey yesterday.

You know, after Pakistan went ahead into the semifinal of the World Twenty20. That seems to be the only logical reason. Jokes aside, I do agree with this ranking. Even though everything is topsy-turvy here in Pakistan, the reason that people are happy inspite of all the troubles, says a lot about the nation.

I still think that instead of calling it happiness, it should be label as contend. People here are contend with their lives. Plus optimistic and hopeful for the good times that they know aren’t very far away. As I’ve said a million times before here, only thing that’s missing is the change of direction.

رنج سے خوگر ہوا انساں تو مٹ جاتا ہے رنج
مشکلیں مجھ پہ پڑیں اتنی کہ آساں ہو گئیں

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

Where do they keep coming up with these silly surveys and their results.

It could be that when you don't have anything to lose, you become care-free.

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

You don’t look like you believe it. :hoonh:

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

i do believe the gospel truth that comes out from the US magazine surveys!

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

Happiness is what you define....and NEF has defined it as follows (People of Pakistan may define is differently):

"In an age of uncertainty, society globally needs a new compass to set it on a path of real progress. The Happy Planet Index (HPI) provides that compass by measuring what truly matters to us – our well-being in terms of long, happy and meaningful lives – and what matters to the planet – our rate of resource consumption."

The above is the executive summary of the report from the New Economic Forum (NEF) web site.

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

Any way you define it, it does not make sense :hehe:

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

makes sense to me.

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

^ wo kesey? :@:

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

From what I have noticed most Pakistani ppl are happy-go-lucky..they have that attitude…no matter how tough a situation can be they always know how to joke about it make light of it…

for e.g the electricity situation that is going on…they have made so many funny videos and songs about it :cb:

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

heard about a UN report few years ago which stated UK kids were among the most unhappiest kids in Europe. So probably same goes for Pakistan too.

Also America, UAE and Kuwait waste too much food and energy and health wise US and Kuwait have the highest rate of obesity in the world.

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

oh and US has a higher crime rate too.

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

if you look carefully, this isn't about happy people, but happy planet. seems to weight "ecological footprint" equally with "experienced wellbeing". and the only reason countries like india, pak, b'desh are up there is because their eco-footprint is near zero. people who dont even have running water or electricity.

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

Pakistanis are most happy because they have a secret ...

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

They convince themselves that they have nothing and when they look they have more than they thought they had … That makes them happy … Whereas in the west we look at our bank accounts thinking we have more than we actually have and that makes us sad … :omg:

Re: Pakistan among top 20 happiest countries

so for psyah, happiness = money. hmm.. not surprised. :p
