Pakistan will send its second string team to compete in West Indies’ domestic cricket event in 2005, officials said on Thursday.
“The West Indies Cricket Board invited our “A” team to compete in their first class tournament which we have agreed and hope it will be a great learning experience for our youngsters,” Pakistan Cricket Board chief executive Ramiz Raja told AFP.
“Considering the West Indies will host the 2007 World Cup it will help our players to gain knowledge about conditions in the Caribbean.”
England, South Africa and Bangladesh have also participated in West Indies’ domestic events in the recent past.
Raja, a former Pakistan captain and opener, said PCB had also planned reciprocal tours at the junior level as part of a development drive.
“We have been stressing on development of the game as this is the lifeline of a system,” he said.
“South Africa and Pakistan will exchange tours at academy level while we have also requested the famous Australian Academy to train some of our junior players,” he said.
“We are also waiting for a programme of a junior tri-series between Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka to be held in Sri Lanka later this year,” he said.
Officials in Pakistan and India agreed on the junior level series during the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting in London earlier this month.
Pakistan cricket is passing through a transitional phase after a disasterous World Cup in Southern Africa in February-March this year where they were ousted in the first round.
Eight senior players – including captain Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram – were dumped and Pakistan’s team is currently comprised of younger players.
Pakistan last year formed a national cricket academy in Lahore and six regional branches modeled after the Australian Cricket Academy in Brisbane to hone country’s raw talent
