I think at least British should have avoided it, but there is a long history of racism against people of sub-continent by their forefathers, so may be they have coined it.
I’m not British, but I also get offended anytime anyone, even our own people, use the word
“paki”. That’s not the correct term, it’s Pakistani, or “Pak”.
There was a girl, she used to call me "Paki" in college but I didn't know it was offensive term back then. She wasn't a racist though and a good friend. Btw, she herself was from Middle East and was a Muslim. I still don't get offended if someone calls me Paki - means from Pakistani. But no one has called me that since then. I know it may be different in uk.
Hate the word. In UK its used in a racist way. It originated from when white gangs used to beat up Pakistanis, used to be known as 'Paki bashing'. Since then in UK atleast the word is used in a racist way to describe any brown person but mainly Pakistanis. Though I understand its not the same elsewhere.

Interesting. But of all browns , why did they attack Pakistanis and came with a word from their identity. I don't think that Pakistani were / are major portion of brown population in UK.

It's the same as madrasi thing. Population of madras < population of rest of South India but they've identified one place (because they haven't bothered to open a map and learn more) which they associate everyone from the south with and completely ignore that people are complex and so are their identities. That's pretty much what racism is all about; diminish someone's identity and rob brown people's ability to be individuals.

I heard that many Pakistanis had to go through tough time while introducing them and country's geography until recently (post 9/11). They were considered as Hindustani (Mostly in US / Europe other than UK). UK people were comparatively more aware of the history, as India remained their colony. What was the level of knowledge of current generation of UK about Pakistan and its people (before 9/11)?
When we used to visit family members in Britain, in the 80s and some part of the 90s, sometimes we were called 'Paki' as a way to insult us. It was said quite often actually. I have no idea what it's like now.
I nowadays use Paki to describe myself sometimes and I call fellow Pakistanis Paki too sometimes, not meant to insult, but too lazy to say the entire word sometimes.
If they had just broadcasted this line throughout Season 4 with a teleprompter ‘ We hate these Pakis’ the message would have gone across.
As usual The show follows the long-standing tradition of hiring Indian actors to play Pakistanis. Infact the only one remotely related to Pakistan is the actor Art Malik who came to the UK from Pakistan at the age of 3. He is as much in touch with the culture of Pakistan as I’m with the life of people living in Uganda or Mongolia. Infact sometimes I think our neighbors take a great delight in playing these stereotype Pakistani characters with the added benefit of American scale salaries sweetening the deal. While researching I came across a venomous article written by the Washington correspondent of the ‘Times of India’ which ridiculed Pakistan’s protest at this show and called the country ‘ Denialistan’ as well as a whole lot of other nasty things. As a Pakistani I was disgusted to see the comment section flooded by Americans and Indians ( Who waste no opportunity to ridicule Pakistan) abusing my country non-stop. What saddens me is that you will never see Pakistanis indulging in such kind of propaganda against India.
I did not watch it. Just another day I was reading news that mayor of Paris will going to sue Fox media, because they claimed no go areas in Paris, where Muslims are in majority and non Muslims can not enter. Mayor of Paris felt bad and planning to sue them. How conscious French people are that they can not take wrong propaganda against their city… But mayor is taking right steps in term of legal battle.
Why did not any single Muslim organization send legal notice to cartonist?
Homeland series is Western biased view of Pakistan… You can not expect real picture of Pakistan…
