Basit Ali’s sensational revealation before Justice Qayyum :
Sharjah’s final against India was ‘fixed’

Mumbai, Oct. 6 : The former Pakistan’s right handed middle order batsman Basit Ali has made sensational revelation before Lahore High Court justice Mian Malik Muhammed Qayyum that an Australasia Cup final against India in April 1994 was ‘fixed’ and he too, along with other members of the Pak team were involved in betting and match-fixing.

According to this correspondent’s highly placed sources close to the Lahore High Court registrar Abdus Salam Khawar, Basit Ali is reported to have recorded his statement the entire team, (including manager Intikhab Alam), had placed money on winning the final against India. The Australasia Cup final was won by Salim Malik’s Pakistani team by 39 runs against India. The Indian team for this six-nation (the other four teams being Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and UAE) Australasia Cup was led by Mohammed Azharuddin.

With Basit Ali’s latest revelation before Justice Qayyum, former Pakistani captain Salim Malik seems to be in hot waters again. Whereas no concrete evidence against any other cricketer is found, but there is one direct evidence found against Malik. Even Rashid Latif is believed to have named Malik as a ring leader, it is learnt. However, according to the legal adviser to the Pakistan Cricket Board, Ali Sibtain Fazli, the main charges (through direct and indirect evidences) against six players- Salim Malik, Wasim Akram, Ijaz Ahmed, Mushtaq Ahmed, Waqar Younis and Basit Ali are recorded.

Basit has made it clear that hadhe been involved in match-fixing he would have been a member of the team then and would not have been sidelined. If anyone tried to disrepute him, he would not hesitate in revealing what he had done for the Pakistani team on the orders of team manager and captain, he warned. Basit is believed to have attacked on manager Intikhab Alam saying to be in drunken state the night before the match who could not remember what happened the previsous day.

Justice Qayyum is believed to have asked Akram’s lawyer Khawaja Tariq Rahim for suggestions to ‘punish’the culprits, he (lawyer) submitted there should be a bar onplaying cricket for a prescribed period to which Justice Malik remarked it was not a penal action.

What the heck is wrong with Basti Ali???

I was reading some newspapers and came across this:

SHARJAH: Pakistan's cricket team was on Tuesday rocked by a media report back home that six players, including captain Wasim Akram, were found guilty of wrongdoing by the judicial commission on betting and match-fixing.

The News daily of Pakistan published on its internet website on Tuesday what it called ``confirmed information regarding some of the recommendations outlined in the 175-page report''. The report by Justice Malik Mohammed Qayyum of the Lahore High Court covered allegations of match-fixing and bribery charges against several Pakistani players, dating back to 1994.

The News report said the recommendations included life ban on Salim Malik and Mushtaq Ahmed, the dismissal of Akram as captain and fines ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for Akram, Ijaz Ahmed, Saeed Anwar and Inzamamul Haq. They have all denied the charges.

Malik, Ahmed and Ijaz Ahmed are not playing in Sharjah. Akram, who missed Tuesday's match against the West Indies due to a muscle pull, declined comment, saying the newspaper report is not official.

The judge is also reported to have said that ``Akram was not a reliable character and the authorities need to keep a close eye on him,'' the paper said.

The report was submitted last week to Pakistan's President Rafiq Tarar in his capacity as the patron of the Pakistan Cricket Board. The president was expected to decide whether to implement Qayyum's recommendations, but it is not clear when he would do so given the uncertain political situation in the country following last week's military coup.

Yawar Saeed, manager of the team for the Sharjah Cup, played down the report. Pakistan selectors are scheduled to meet to finalise the 16-man squad for its tour of Australia beginning later this month and Saeed said the report will not change their plans.

``I have only seen the report on the internet. As far as the team and I are concerned, it is a speculative leak of the recommendations,'' Saeed said.

``You can't stop newspapers from publishing such reports. We have not received any official word from either PCB or the president,''he added.

Saeed stressed that the team was in good spirits and was looking forward to both the Sharjah Cup final on Friday and the upcoming tour of Australia

Akram was last month appointed captain for the rest of the season by Mujeeb-ur Rehman, the chief executive of PCB. The other players were also cleared to play pending the findings of the judicial commission.

Rehman, who had close links with deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, has been untraced since last week's military coup in Pakistan. PCB affairs are now being handled by Javed Zaman, the only other member of the ad-hoc committee appointed by Sharif to run cricket last July.
