Meena Kumari died during the shooting of this film. I think that is what makes this movie even more captivating. They used a body double for a lot of the scenes.

Meena Kumari died after the movie was released. The movie was not doing good at the box office, but when Meena Kumari died it became a blockbuster. It was one of the big hits in India and people watched it 5-10 times.
This movie took a long time to make around 20 years. It was because of maritial problems between Meena Kumari and her estranged husband Kamal Amrohi. Meena Kumari had a lot of drinking problems. The film was shelved for couple of years due to the estrangement. So you see in some parts Meena Kumari very young and some parts very old. Towards the end of Meena Kumari's life they started shooting and completed the film.
By the time the film was released most people who worked on the film were dead. Music director (I think Ghulam Mohammed) died without getting recognised.
oh yeah a lovely movie...i remember my mom forced me to watch it the first time...i love the sequence where Raj Kumar just sees Mina Kumari's feet and comments something...like..."yeah paon ko jameen par na na utare maile ho jayege..." or something like that...wonderful movie and beautiful music.
I have nostalgic memories about this film.It was released in early 70s.I was studying Engineering at that time.We watched it so many times that we lost count.Whenever during evenings/nights ,we had not much to do,we would just go to watch this movie. Its music director late Gulam Mohd. wasa recognised entity before this movie was released but he became famous and got much fame only after its release. As far as I remember, its background music was scored by late Naushad,as Gulam Mohd was dead by the time film was released.
