Salman hits unbeaten 91 in Pakistan XI win

LAHORE: Opener Salman Butt cracked a quick unbeaten 91 and Taufeeq Umar struck a brilliant half-century (68) to lead the Pakistan XI to a thumping eight-wicket win over the Rest of Pakistan XI in a one-day fund raising match here at the Gaddafi Stadim on Monday.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) organised the match for the Asian tsunami survivors and flood affectees of Balochistan, asking the best available cricketing talent of the country to turn out for this noble cause.

Salman dominated in the role of opener and kept the side in the hunt for runs as the Pakistan XI replied with a total of 188 for two in 39.2 overs before bowling out the Rest of Pakistan XI at 187 in 47.5 overs, thanks to some impressive bowling by pacer Mohammad Sami and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria. Both the top scorers put the rivals’ bowling attack to the sword and produced 151 runs for a sound start, putting their side in sight of victory.

Salman slammed 13 fours off 122 balls in 158 minutes and Taufeeq shone with one six and 10 boundaries in a 96-ball knock consuming 131 minutes.

Earlier, middle order batsman Aamer Bashir top scored with a fine 70 for the Rest XI most of whose batsmen lacked confidence and temperament to cope with the pace of Sami and the deadly spin of Danish.

Sami finished with three for 32 off nine overs and the pick of the bowlers was Danish with a four-wicket haul for 42 runs in 8.5 overs.

The only notable feature of the Rest of Pakistan XI batting was a fourth-wicket partnership of 92 runs between Aamer and Faisal Iqbal (34). Aamer survived 110 balls in 128 minutes, forcing nine hits through the fence. Misbah-ul-Haq made 23.
