Pak-US joint military exercise in summer
ISLAMABAD - The armed forces of Pakistan and the United States will conduct joint military exercises early next summer.
The combat contingents of the two countries will participate in the joint military manoeuvring with the most sophisticated warfare.
Commander-in-Chief of the American Central Command, General Tommy Franks spent the second day of his visit in close consultations with the leadership of the Pakistan armed forces.
During these consultations the two sides reiterated the understanding that armed forces of the two countries would maintain close friendship and professional coordination, the daily Jang reported here yesterday.
The two sides were in agreement to further cement ties between the two armies.
Sources said that the visiting US commander spent seven hours in military headquarters, GHQ wherein Pakistan’s Chief of General Staff, Lt. General Mohammad Yousaf Khan briefed him on the strategic regional situation. The briefing was also attended by majority of principal officers of the GHQ.
Earlier General Tommy called on Pakistan Chief Executive, General Pervez Musharraf in his office in GHQ. The American guest expressed pleasure at the professional training of the Pakistan armed forces.
General Franks was informed that Pakistani troops are maintaining maximum restraint on the Line of Control for the sake of peace.
This, he was told, was done despite the negative approach of India. The American General showed interest in matters relating to Afghanistan and called for eradication of “terrorism”. The American General hailed General Musharraf’s commitment to peace and extended good wishes for his success.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Navy is to express its concern with US General Tommy R. Franks, chief of the US Central Command (Centcom), over the presence of American warships in international waters off Pakistan’s coast, reports said yesterday.
“The innocent passage is something different but the continuous presence of extra-regional forces is a matter of concern for us,” Islamabad-based newspaper The Nation quoted unidentified senior Pakistan naval officials as saying. There are reports, the paper said, that currently there are US, British, Russian and French warships stationed in the international waters near Pakistan.
The Nation also said US military strikes against Afghanistan were launched from US ships stationed in Pakistan’s territorial waters in in 1998.
