Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

**Hi,

i just watched live feed on Dunya TV of Pakistani PM Mr. Yusuf Reza Gilani arrive at Multan Railway Station in a helicopter to lay the foundation stone of a brand new state-of-the art railway station.

Given the sorrow state of Railways in Pakistan, do you think it is a good thing to invest in building state-of-the art Railway Stations rather than buying state-of-the art railway equipment like locomotives and coaches and improve the non-existent passenger facilities/amenities.

i made this post because i’m a rail enthusiast!

ur views will be appreciated. thank you.**

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

Traffic congestion is becoming a major problem in Pakistan now. Even a dime they are investing in Mass Transit project i am all for it. Gov. of Pakistan should learn lessons from autobahn or interstate highway systems and implement that in Pakistan. It will foster growth and create jobs.

i made this reply because i'm a rail hater!

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

**really? oh oh! how come?

i think to have a mass transit system, you need tonnes of money which is unfortunately not there. buildings are there, make some renovations and they are fine. railways needs water, electricity, diesel, locomotives and sufficient number of coaches and locomotives to run an efficient railway system.

platforms/buildings must be the least of the priorities.**

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

why does a railway station needs to be inaugurated and that too by high profile person like prime minster himself?
it prolly cost more money to provide him security there than to build the station.

i remember about 10 years ago when mushi planned to visit ajmer shari,f rajasthan govt spent 60 crore ( 600 million rupees) or around 1000 million pak rupees on his visit that he cancelled in the end :(

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

Actually poor countries like ours need more rail networks. in india most of the interstates are empty of cars and trains are completely full. its the most preferred and affordable mode of transport by poor and middle class.

nawaz sharif built motorways which looks good but doesnt serve purpose for the price it was built. he could have invested in railroad network which could have moved a lot more people. considering the fact that pakistan has barely added any kilometers in the british built rail network.
motorways are good but it is over kill for undeveloped countries like ours.

BTW i love railways. its like a moving city.

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

Yeah, I completely agree with you. The current problem with railways in pakistan is that we have ghulam bilour (a drunkard) as railway minister. The interesting thing is that he has never set foot in a train ever in his life. Moreover, he has his own bus transport company so you can well imagine the conflict of interest. Therefore, he has shut down half of the trains in pakistan by showing them in loss. The ones that are left running are in such a pathetic condition that people die from floor falling for example. Brainless Gillani should pay more attention to the destruction by this man rather than inaugurate new stations.

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

AbdulQadir GIllani might see putting up railway station more profitable for him them actually having the same money invested in the right place... moreover, what is the use of Railway station when most of the trains/routes are closed..

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

oh i just realized that multan is peer sahab's constituency. now it all makes sense.
it doesnt matter how many projects you finish in politics, all that matters is how many projects you start to make headlines.

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

First, the OP needs to make it sure the PM inaugurated the railway station actually?

I heard it was a bypass or bridge which will lessen the distance between karachi and lahore. And he inaugurated it not in the city but in suburbs where his brother has already been selected as an MPA. So obviously the region is under the nazr e karam of Gillani brothers for the future prospects. Another headline ofcourse. And a bait for the native voters.

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

*he did both...he inaugrated the Bahawalpur overpass and later attended the foundation laying ceremony of Multan Railway Station...u may find the video on youtube. :) there were two helipcopters carrying him and his entourage and landed at the nearby existing Multan Railway Station. i saw it live on Dunya TV. :)

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

I just checked on a news website. Yes he did both. I knew about the first part only : barbie: nvm the intentions will still remain the same.

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

i AGREE...his buddies can also make thru construction kickbacks. It's a political stunt. :D

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

i wunder why there is a need for a new railway station when railway services are in shambles...they must improve on building a better and reliable train service. they must buy new locomotives, coaches and provide basic necessities for passengers like better passenger amenities, more trains, longer trains, more accommodation, better reservation system and more employee accountability.

Re: Pak PM Gilani lays foundation of Multan Railway Station

ahhh
couldn't resist the temptation of reading all this and not writing something :)

Multan station brings back fond memories - of an era that will never return
in the good old college / uni days - i used to sling a bag over my shoulder every summer, with just a pair of jeans, some tee shirts and stuff and headed off on a 15 day break. I just hopped on to a train going north - no matter which one, A student pass in those days used to cost ridiculously cheap - so once i got to multan or khanewal, depending which train i was travelling, i would get off for a break, spend a couple of hours on the platform, take a bath at the water taps, refresh myself, eat some "biryani" or whatever was on offer at the stalls, drink some chai, then do some matar gasht on the railway platform and hopped on the next train going to Lahore or Faisalabad. The memories i have are of scorching heat, enough to drive a person insane... and that bath i took at the taps felt soooo good, in my chaddi banyan :D
and then off to find my train for the onwards trip, which would be parked on a side line and i got onboard usually in an empty compartment, it would be like stepping inside an oven, then i used to get out after "grabbing" my berth, and then spend some more time on the platform gulping down Faanta ki bootlaiN :D before heading back to the train and settling down for the rest of the journey to lahore or faisalbad.

That was the mid 80's

care free days
memories :(
