Pak-Iran trade seen at billion dollars a year

ISLAMABAD: Iranian officials expressed their desire to increase bilateral trade with Pakistan to the tune of $1 billion per annum. Ahmed Fasihi, Commercial Attache and First Secretary, Head of Economy, Mohsen Pakpervar said this in the meeting on Saturday with President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Nasir Khan. They said enhanced trade ties between the two countries would help promote relations in other fields. At present bilateral trade between Iran and Pakistan stands at $650 million and economic agents of both the countries wish to increase to the maximum level. Fasihi said the ongoing trade between the two countries was not up to the potential and it required appropriate measures to extend it to the optimum level. He said Iran gave priority to imported goods from Pakistan. . The ICCI president suggested that Pakistan and Iran should encourage border trade by establishing Customs ports at borders. He appreciated the role of the commercial section of Iranian Consulate particularly in terms of facilitating the business community of Pakistan.

Commercial Attaché informed that his office signed 16 Memorandums of Understanding with business chambers and trade delegations in a short time and also arranged meeting with 1,800 members in few months for the enhancement of bilateral trade. He said that their office sending minimum three members daily to Iran for the enhancement of bilateral trade. Ahmed Fasihi also invited president ICCI to send a business delegation to Iran for the enhancement of bilateral trade because both countries have good relations. He said Pakistan and Iran should undertake a joint study of their bilateral trade relations and their share in global trade. He stressed that being brother and neighbouring countries both should identify the potential import and export items between and give it wide publicity. Secretary-General, Majid Shabbir and Managing Director, Pak-Turk Business Association, Mr Mehmet Necmettin Durms were also present at the meeting.

i think benazir might have been able to convince americans that she would help americans against iranians which is why americans may have decided to support her. too bad our media is too dumb to ask benazir what her stance is on iran and whether she supports the iran gas pipeline which pak is pushing for despite huge opposition from americans. if benazir says she opposes dealing with iran, she will alienate awam. otoh, if she is positive about iran, americans will not be happy. we wont know the answer though because pak media is completely cluless about pretty much everything.

Absolutely right. The so-called big names such ac Shahid Masood and Hamid Mir base their interviews and programmes on hate for President Musharaf rather than real news.

I don't think BB will ever have much sway over Pakistan's defence and foreign policy, even if she becomes PM again. She has openly admitted in her interviews that President Musharraf would remain supreme in this area, and the army would keep her in check if she got out of hand as well.
