Pakistan hold India 1-1 in football series opener Sun Jun 12, 5:41 PM ET

QUETTA, Pakistan (AFP) - Striker Mohammad Essa scored from a free kick Sunday to help Pakistan hold India 1-1 in the thrilling opening match of the first football series played between the South Asian rivals.

An enthusiastic crowd of 20,000 fans cheered as Essa scored the equaliser after India's 65th minute goal from Sunil Chetri following a barren first half.

Essa, the top scorer for Pakistan in last year's SAF Games, where his side beat India in the final, held his nerves to score with just 12 minutes left.

The second match is scheduled at Peshawar on Thursday and the last match will take place at Lahore on Saturday -- both to be played under lights.

Pakistan matched India move for move in the first half during which the visitor's captain Shanmugam Venkatesh helped India create three good scoring chances -- all thwarted by home team's impressive defence.

India, without their ace striker Baichung Bhutia, who missed the tour due to fitness problems, dominated the second half.

Chetri, who failed to capitalise on two good chances in the first half, found net during a goal-mouth melee to break the deadlock.

"We missed at least two good chances in the first half and two in the second. That forced us to change strikers and they too created good chances but we failed to score the second goal," said Venkatesh.

Pakistan forced a corner in the 77th minute and won a free kick after a foul by an Indian defender, with Essa's free kick hitting the right post and sneaking into the goal.

"We got urged on by the crowd who were chanting 'India will win' and Essa saved our blushes," Pakistan captain Jaffar Khan said.

"It's fantastic to hold India who are superior in rankings."

Pakistan team is ranked 177 to India's 135th in FIFA (International Football Federation) rankings.

The football series was initiated by Pakistan to further expand bilateral sporting ties after India lifted a ban imposed in 2000 because of political tensions.

Amid a thaw in relations in 2003 India's cricket team toured Pakistan last year for the first time since 1989 and Pakistan made the return trip this year.

The two countries also played an eight-match hockey series on both sides of the border last year.

Organsiers kept tight security with over 600 policemen on the ground for the match in Quetta, the capital of southwestern Baluchistan province which has been hit by a mini-tribal revolt.

Re: Pak-India Football Series 2005

wats the commentary like on the games?
and who are the commentators?

Re: Pak-India Football Series 2005

India won the second match 1-0. The irony of this match was that Pakistan played a lot better than last match but this time they wasted so many glaring chances wihle Indians took one of theirs.

Re: Pak-India Football Series 2005

as we are all used to watching top quality football matches like the english premier league and spanish league etc on the leading sports channels via satellite cable TV.....it was a welcome change to see how our own domestic team plays this worlds most popular game of football.
To be brutally honest.....let me say i was dissappointed and ashamed at the quality of football on display in the two matches. YUCK YUCK YUCK.
i think we were lucky to have got away with a 1-1 draw in the first match, because if the visiting team had converted even 25% of their chances...we'd have lost by a huge huge margin.
being a big footbal fan myself, i felt like throwing up after watching the two matches.
I DEFINITELY WILL NOT BE WATCHING ANY MORE OF PAKISTANS FOOTBALL MATCHES UNLESS OUR HALF ASLEEP AUTHORITIES DO SOMETHING TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE GAME IN THE COUNTRY.

Pak win the last match and take trophy...........

** Pakistan humble India 3-0 as three-match series ends in a draw**

By Muhammad Ali

LAHORE: Pakistan downed India 3-0 in the final tie as the three-match soccer series between the South Asian archrivals ended in a 1-1 draw at the Punjab Stadium here on Saturday evening. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz was the chief guest and presented the trophies to the winners and the runners-up. Also present on the occasion were Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool, Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) President Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat.

The hosts desperately needed the win after succumbing to a 1-0 defeat in the second contest on Thursday in Peshawar. The first game ended 1-1 in Quetta. Pakistan appeared pumped up by the prospect of Rs 1.5 million win bonus and dominated the proceedings of the match in front of a 7,000 crowd. Mohammad Essa’s strike in the second minute opened the account for the green shirts, which put India immediately on the back foot. Tanveer Ahmad then doubled the lead two minutes from half-time when Indian defender Mahesh Gawli failed to clear the ball.

In the second half, striker Arif Mahmood made it 3-0 to seal the fate of the opponents. India rested striker Abhishek Yadav from the starting eleven but his replacement Abdul Hakkim was well marked by the strong Pakistan defense.

It was Pakistan’s first home victory against India and only the third time they have ever beaten their neighbours following wins at Ernakulum, India in 1959 and in the SAFF (South Asian Football Federation) Cup in Dhaka in 2003.

“Our strikers converted all the chances that came their way,” said an elated Pakistan captain Jaffar Khan in his post match comments. Although the series was declared drawn, Pakistan will keep the trophy by virtue of their superior goal difference. A second edition of the series is scheduled to be held in India next year.

The football series was initiated by Pakistan to further expand bilateral sporting ties after India lifted a ban imposed in 2000 because of political tensions. Amid a thaw in relations in 2003 India’s cricket team toured Pakistan last year for the first time since 1989 and Pakistan made the return trip this year. The two countries also played an eight-match hockey series on both sides of the border last year.

Speaking at the prize distribution ceremony, PM Shaukat said the relations between the two neighbouring countries were improving due to sports. The PM said the national team played well in the series. “I am happy that the series has been levelled and I am confident that Pakistan team will improve further in the future events,” he added. He also announced a grant of Rs 20 million for installation of floodlights in the stadium.

Re: Pak-India Football Series 2005

we couldnt win the trophy, fasal....the series ended as a draw.
1st match: draw
2nd match: IND won
3rd match: PAKISTAN won
end result: 1-1.

PS: watching this series was a real torture...the quality of soccer in the sub-continent is despicable. :(

Re: Pak-India Football Series 2005

^ We got the trophy on better goal average. And I will agree with you on the quality of football. Having said that, Pakistan played quite decent football in last match. some of the movements were methodical and creative.
