Tri-nation event in Abu Dhabi

By M. Satyanarayan, Staff Reporter
Abu Dhabi: A Pakistan Masters XI led by Inzamam- ul- Haq, the Sri Lankan Masters XI led by Marvan Atapattu along with an Indian Masters XI will feature in a three-team Zayed Cup Cricket tournament, starting here on May 1 to raise funds for Tsunami relief.

The three-match event, being held under the patronage of Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Education and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Cricket Control Board (ADCCB), will also be the official inaugural of the Zayed Cricket Stadium.

B.R Shetty, ADCCB President, said, "The matches will be day-night encounters starting at 3.30 pm and the teams will meet each other once in a league format.

"The Indian and Sri Lankan teams will meet in the opening match, followed by the Sri Lankan and Pakistan masters the next day with the last match on May 3 to feature the Indian and Pakistan Masters teams.

“The Pakistan cricketers are currently enjoying a terrific reception at home after their 4-2 triumph over India and with the entire squad coming over next week. We are expecting that euphoria to spill over to the UAE capital,” he said.

Apart from battling for the Shaikh Zayed Cup, the teams will also help raise funds for the Tsunami victims. The game will also be a curtain-raiser for the 20,000 plus-capacity state-of-the-art Zayed International Cricket Stadium.

“We have very little time left but we have been working hard for some time now. We expect a good response from the cricket fans here and from the Gulf region,” Shetty said.

The Sri Lankan Masters team consists of their current players, excepting those who are playing County cricket.

Michael Vandort returns to the main team while off-spinner Suraj Mohammad and Malinga Bandara along with allrounder Gayan Wijekoon are among the fresh faces.

The Indian Masters XI is yet to be confirmed by the organisers. “Daily tickets, season tickets, VIP tickets and Corporate boxes are all on offer with opportunities to advertise and support the event in various forms,” Shetty added.

The line-ups
Pakistan Masters XI: Inzamam-Ul- Haq, Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi, Yousuf Youhana, Rana Naveed, Salman Butt, Shoaib Malek, Abdul Razzaq, Kamran Akmal, Rao Iftikar, Arshad Khan and Mo’en Khan.

Re: Pak-Ind-Sri Lanka in the UAE from May 1st

sigh

am I the only one that is getting tired of pak-ind cricket matches. I don't know, they play with each other too much. We should only meet once every 2 years or so.

Re: Pak-Ind-Sri Lanka in the UAE from May 1st

Could be due to the the fear of losing again in UAE, after all indians have unplesant memories of countless defeats at Sharjah. But then come on they should give it a shot, its not sharjah its Abu dhabi this time.

Re: Pak-Ind-Sri Lanka in the UAE from May 1st

haha.. if 3-4 of the world team are australians then they really do need only IX
