Pakistan hockey player and two officials fined over alcohol, hug

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports Friday fined a national hockey player and two team officials for ‘unethical behaviour’ after pictures circulated of them hugging a woman and apparently drinking alcohol during the Champions Challenge Tournament in Argentina last month. The committee, which met under its chairman Jamshed Dasti, fined forward Rehan Butt Rs 100,000 and team’s coach Shahid Ali Khan and manager Mohammad Asif Bawja Rs 50,000 each. Dasti also instructed Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) director general Amir Hamza Gilani to ensure payment of fine and provide receipts to the standing committee. Pakistan is a conservative Muslim country where men hugging women in public is taboo and even men shaking hands with women is frowned upon. Drinking alcohol is illegal for Muslims.
“Islamic culture does not allow us to hug a lady and have alcohol. Players are ambassadors of their countries and they should never forget this,” Dasti said. Dasti warned Shahid and Bajwa not to get involved in such activities in future. He asked the PHF to devise a code of ethics for players representing Pakistan in international tournaments and ensure its compliance. Pictures run by a Pakistani television channel and posted on the Internet showed one of the men hugging a woman and another apparently drinking a beer. Another picture showed a group of men sitting at a table with glasses in front of them, apparently containing alcohol.

Bajwa told a private TV channel the woman in the photograph was a tournament liaison officer. “All officials and players considered her as our sister,” Bajwa said before the fines were imposed. “The pictures were taken at the end of the tournament, after Pakistan lost in the final to New Zealand, and the woman had put the pictures on her Facebook page,” he added. Hockey is Pakistan’s national sport although the team’s fortunes have waned since it won Olympic gold in 1984. Dasti said the team’s failure at the tournament made the ‘disgusting’ activities that much worse.

Re: Pak hockey stars in trouble over `immoral activities’.

‘sister’???

‘hum paanch waqt namaz parhte hain’

im shocked at how this guy is trying to JUSTIFY these pictures with his load of crap instead of admitting they did something wrong. does he think people are stupid or what??? and how smartly he ignored the question about the drink in that player’s hand. shameful, indeed.

Re: Pak hockey stars in trouble over `immoral activities'.

did they drunk??????

Re: Pak hockey stars in trouble over `immoral activities'.

How does Bajwa sahab justify her being sister to these guys? Are you kidding me man...Aint no sister of mine gonna pose like that with me, with low clevage. And the alcohol drink question was dodged. Like the news anchor said, these pics are self-explanatory. Maybe thats why they lost the final to NZ, out late partying.

As Pakistani players on foreign tours, you shouldnt be allowed to enter the bars/night club. I am sorry to say this but just because people pray 5 times a day doesnt make them pious. Its the sincerity in their hearts and piety in the hearts. I have known people pray and go to clubs. People in my family pray 5 times a day, but then they do "jaddo" to other family members and cause them harm. I know a someone close family - who claims to be very religious and he is trying to kick his mom out of her house because the house is under his name and father died and he wants to sell the house and get the money - close to million dollar value of the house.

If you are a practising Muslim, you would not enter these night clubs and you will not hug these women and certainly will not touch any part of their body. See how these guys have their hands on the hips of these girls in the photos. If you are practising Muslims, these things are all haram and you will avoid it because you fear Allah.

Re: Pak hockey stars in trouble over `immoral activities'.

fined over a bloody hug? what the hell is wrong with us as a nation...

yeah lets keep policing people's personal lives. who took a picture with who and who drank what... lets dedicate more national resources to that.

Dasti needs to get a TV show like Jerry Springer or something. what a clown...

Re: Pak hockey stars in trouble over `immoral activities'.

immoral? by what universal standards? peeves me to no end when people act as akhlaqiyaat key thaikedaar for the entire nation.

I have no problems with what a player does off-the-field as long as his performance on-the-field isn't adversely affected.

and someone needs to find this Dasti guy something constructive to do. He just wants to be on television any chance he gets and make a mockery of the country and its system.

Besides, what the guy says in the interview is right - all the pics are with the same girl, and the pictures are in a public setting. The "behen" bit might be a lil exaggerated, but the pics don't point to any indiscretions as such - that's how girls dress when out partying. I feel sorry for those who've blown this out of proportion cuz they're just so khwaar in their own lives.

Excellent!

Re: Pak hockey stars in trouble over `immoral activities'.

The Dunya news guy was actually more over reacting than he should have been by saying that he not explain these photos in public. You idiot you are already showing the photos on the tv, than you are saying that you cannot describe these photos. Aparently, there was not much wrong with these photo graphs. More is being done in Pakistani parties in PAKISTAN itself. These media guys dont act like these over those burger parties.

I do believe that you get a ton of sawaab for beating Indians. So does it not apply against the misdeeds?
