Pak Hi-Society !!!!

Re: Pak Hi-Society !!!!

I'm not singing anyone's praises. It's just that I do believe in the 'to each their own philosophy'. You're being civil by just voicing your opinion, others aren't this kind. Some people choose to gawk and stare to make others uncomfortable or worse use violence to silence all who oppose them. A little freedom is all I'm for, as long as no one gets hurt.

Re: Pak Hi-Society !!!!

It still is quite subjective.. Someone one from an Islamic forum might look at the 'what are you wearing' thread here on GS and think most in there aren't dressed 'decently' as they're not wearing hijab..

Don't those women in the Pak magazines wear eastern and western anyway.. I don't know that much about it but seems as tho there's just 10x more attention on them when they do choose to wear western and/or revealing.. Women in other countries (inc some Muslim ones) don't seem to get criticised as much when they choose to wear western clothes.. If they want to experiment sometimes and do something a bit different I don't see the big deal.. As they usually are more exposed to other cultures it's only natural that they'd like to mix it up a bit..

Re: Pak Hi-Society !!!

What am I missing here? I am not getting the backlash against the “high society” here.
Skin show or conscienceless spending is not exclusive to a particular class only.

Re: Pak Hi-Society !!!!

Couldn't have said it better myself. Everyone judges, consciously or subconsciously, and some people for the sake of appearing moral or perhaps hoping to appear liberal like these "high society" can't bare to hear others voicing an opinion that doesn't conform to their own. If you don't agree, fine. But this is a public forum, and you're bound to get a variety of opinions.

As a side note, people can wear revealing clothes as much as they please, i've been living in the U.S my whole life, i'm accustomed to it. What leaves a bad taste in my mouth is that these some of these girls are trying to look like the Kardashians. Is that what makes them so "high society"? There are plenty of others in Pakistan who are rich, educated and do a lot for the community and they go unrecognized. I don't know if i'm being clear, but what irks me is that in order to get classified as PAKISTAN'S high society, you you need to look WESTERN- and that doesn't make sense to me.

Re: Pak Hi-Society !!!!

I wasn't really debating any religious aspect as such. I live in the west myself and wear western clothes and see nothing wrong with it . But unlike other muslim countries, Pakistan is unique in the sense that it has its own established dress code, i.e the Shalwar Kameez. If given the opportunity to publicise, Why wouldn't I want to promote my own pakistani fashion designers and wear traditional shalwar kameez or something?

How these people live or what they wear in their private lives does not concern me. However the question is, in public, if the main focus is on me being a rich and succesful 'Pakistani' and I'm being featured in a magazine as such, would I want to wear a revealing western dress and talk about french designers even if these have very little relevance or acceptance in my country?

The reality is, that some of these so called liberal and rich people of Pakistan shun their own culture and feel uneasy in being recognised as Pakistanis. Even wearing Shalwar kameez is beneath them. They live in Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad but pretend it is Paris. They feel the need to adopt an ostentatious western style of living in order to prove that they are indeed 'High Society'!
If a magazine featured high society women of China, would they also flaunt themselves in skimpy clothes and ignore their chinese heritage just to prove that they are rich and successful?? Somehow I think not...

Re: Pak Hi-Society !!!!

^I don't think it's that common for very rich/successful Chinese women to wear their traditional clothes.. In fact I can't think of another culture where it's seen as such a negative to wear western clothes..

Rich Arabs and Oriental women do tend to wear western gowns and western clothing in general as their everyday wear.. They don't make as much of it as we do or see it as an attack on their culture..

(I haven't been to China but I've been to Vietnam and Thailand plenty of times and I've never come across women being criticised for wearing western wear over traditional clothing the way women in Pakistan often are)..

Re: Pak Hi-Society !!!!

Pakistani men wear Western clothes all the time and they're never criticized for not promoting their culture.

Re: Pak Hi-Society !!!!

^Funny that, isn't it..

Re: Pak Hi-Society !!!

Who said there is anything wrong in wearing western clothes in Pakistan? But perhaps you wouldn’t see Kate Middleton representing Britain in that pose and attire! If you are OK with the woman above representing Pakistan’s rich and succesful, then fine, but I will carry on having my reservations…

Re: Pak Hi-Society !!!!

I know what the problem is, Pakistani (I'd take the risk and add Indian celebs too) women simply do not in any way, look remotely appealing or respectable in Western attire, no matter what cut or shade they're wearing. They all suffer from I'd call the Kardashian syndrome, no matter how expensive or trendy their outfit, they'll just end up looking cheap, vulgar and pretentious. I'd doubt people will have many reservations if these high society looked as graceful and natural as Fan Bing Bing in Western gowns.
