Re: Pak Hi-Society !!!
I wasn’t really debating any religious aspect as such. I live in the west myself and wear western clothes and see nothing wrong with it . But unlike other muslim countries, Pakistan is unique in the sense that it has its own established dress code, i.e the Shalwar Kameez. If given the opportunity to publicise, Why wouldn’t I want to promote my own pakistani fashion designers and wear traditional shalwar kameez or something?
How these people live or what they wear in their private lives does not concern me. However the question is, in public, if the main focus is on me being a rich and succesful ‘Pakistani’ and I’m being featured in a magazine as such, would I want to wear a revealing western dress and talk about french designers even if these have very little relevance or acceptance in my country?
The reality is, that some of these so called liberal and rich people of Pakistan shun their own culture and feel uneasy in being recognised as Pakistanis. Even wearing Shalwar kameez is beneath them. They live in Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad but pretend it is Paris. They feel the need to adopt an ostentatious western style of living in order to prove that they are indeed ‘High Society’!
If a magazine featured high society women of China, would they also flaunt themselves in skimpy clothes and ignore their chinese heritage just to prove that they are rich and successful?? Somehow I think not…
