Pak cab driver new IBO welterweight champ

By Aamir Ghauri

LONDON: A Nottingham-based Pakistan cab driver created history on Monday night by out-boxing the reigning welterweight world champion in a 12-round bout. In the International Boxing Organisation title fight, Jawaid Khaliq, 30, produced a sensational show to emphatically defeat New Yorker Willy Wise and secure the crown in front of a cheerful home crowd.

Jawaid, who holds the British and Commonwealth titles in his weight, completely outclassed Wise to earn a unanimous decision. He shook the world champion in the second round with a head shot and despite being seriously cut over the left eye and rocked once himself, never looked in any danger of losing to the veteran American.

If there were any predictions of a routine match where the known holder comes down to a small town to thrash a local challenger, these proved wrong after the first round. A very tense-looking Jawaid opened up in the second round and managed successfully to take control of the fight. The pattern did not change till the referee pointed both to their corners at the end of the 12th round.

Wrapped in the yellow and green Kashmiri flag, Jawaid kept strutting all over the ring to the cheers of his fans. In a post-bout interview, Jawaid said he owed his success to Allah Almighty’s blessings and the hardwork of his coach and trainer. When asked if he would continue with his cabbing career, the jubilant boxer laughingly said he would think otherwise.

Is this the first time that any person with links from the subcontinent has won a world championship in boxing?

Well done and congratulations to Jawaid

Hey one more thing
These things are hard to explain
For some it seems strange... to swallow
The frontier of our minds
Is the last place we find
But maybe the first place we should go

rooster..you got a prob with whitesox? why cant they pitch for whitesox

and three cheers for the desi boxing world champ..good going

WhiteSox? I am thinking of Cabis playing for the Yankies.

As for Boxing. I think this is the first title a Pakistani has ever won after the 1988 olympics where a Pakistani (sorry I cant recall his name) won a Bronze medal in Soul.

i guess they can but they will look better with Cubbies .. reasons
Cabbies sound like Cubbies
Cubs are unpredictable so are our cabbie brothers...
Cubs are 'blue collar' team .. so are our desi cabbies (even though they dont wash em often!)
Our cabbies will feel home with Sosa
