Pak agrees to 48-hour timetable for action against LeT

Rice denies 48-hour deadline for Pakistan to take action

Updated at: 2000 PST, Sunday, December 07, 2008 WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Sunday that Pakistan must act quickly to arrest suspects linked to the deadly attacks in India to help ensure there are no follow-on assaults.

Interviewed on a foreign TV channel, Rice said she stressed during her visit to Pakistan last week how important it was for Islamabad to act quickly but denied there was a 48-hour deadline to take action.

“The important thing is that Pakistan act and that these people are brought to justice and that any information that they may have is put to use in making sure follow-on attacks don’t happen,” Rice said.

Rice echoed remarks from Pakistan’s foreign office denying Islamabad had agreed to a 48-hour timetable to take action against Pakistanis accused of involvement in the Mumbai attacks.

The Washington Post reported that Pakistan had agreed to a deadline imposed by the United States and India to arrest three people and formulate a plan to take action against a militant group accused of involvement in the attacks.

“No. There’s not a timetable involved here,” the US top diplomat said.

“Obviously, this is counterterrorism work. It’s hard work. And it’s not as if these people are sitting on the surface,” she said, adding that Pakistani leaders “understood their responsibilities and now we’re waiting.”

The 60-hour Mumbai siege by Islamic militants has badly affected relations between India and Pakistan, the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbors who have fought three wars since independence from Britain.

India says all 10 gunmen involved in the assault came from Pakistan, and has handed Islamabad a list of 20 terror suspects, with demands for their arrest and extradition.

Suspicion over the recent Mumbai carnage, which left 172 dead, has fallen on the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, a group that has fought Indian rule in Kashmir and was blamed for a 2001 attack on the New Delhi parliament.

Before visiting Pakistan, Rice made a solidarity visit to India.

Re: Pak agrees to 48-hour timetable for action against LeT

Almost each and every claim made the Indian media has been busted in one way or another. Their credibility has gone down the drain.

I wish that was true and they have indeed made a lot of ridiculous claims.

However, from a world perspective it is Pakistan that is looking like guilty. We have denied any Pakistani was involved but now it looks like some LT connection. We are also taking action against "training camps" after denying their presence.

Just watch any news channel or read any news paper, there is not a single person that does not say this is an LT operation or Pakistanis were involved.

Re: Pak agrees to 48-hour timetable for action against LeT

^ if ur damned anyway, why bother?

pakistanies should stop caring about this current notoreity. its not the first time we've been demonised, and we're still around. screw em.

Pakistan did act in 48 hours as told … Looks like Pakistan has accepted LeT did the Mumbai attacks

Pakistan raids camp of group blamed for Mumbai | Reuters

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani security forces on Sunday raided a camp used by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), two sources said, in a strike against the militant group blamed by India for last month’s deadly attacks on Mumbai.
Local man Nisar Ali told Reuters the operation began in the afternoon in Shawai on the outskirts of Muzaffarabad, the capital of the Pakistani side of disputed Kashmir region.

“I don’t know details as the entire area was sealed off, but I heard two loud blasts in the evening after a military helicopter landed there,” Ali said.
An official with the Jamaat-ud-Dawa charity, which is linked to LeT, said security forces had taken over the camp.

India has demanded Pakistan take swift action over what it says is the latest anti-India militant attack emanating from Pakistani soil. No comment on the raid was immediately available from Indian officials.
At least 171 people were killed during the three-day assault last month across Mumbai, India’s financial capital, which has imperilled the improving ties between the south Asian nuclear rivals.

Mumbai police have said the gunmen were controlled by the Pakistan-based LeT group blamed for earlier attacks including a 2001 assault on India’s parliament that nearly sparked the two countries’ fourth war since independence from Britain in 1947.
LeT was formed with the help of Pakistan’s intelligence agencies to fight Indian rule in Kashmir, but analysts say it is now part of a global Islamist militant scene. They say it is sympathetic to, and may have direct ties with, al Qaeda.

Re: Pak agrees to 48-hour timetable for action against LeT

Pakistan DID NOT RECIEVE ANY 48 HOUR notification neither agreed on one.

Such "Master to his Slave" news are sensational but total lies.
India dare to keep using this "tone of agresion" and unconfirmed reports of Indian FM calling upon the the President of via phone and gave him his crap n warning are in light of 'Pakistan's Shock on Mumbai attacks' Its about time to go for a national consensus and deal with India like 'pay back time'

I think Indian have gone mad and totally lost it, I have never read or heard so much protocol breaches before.

Imagin this "Mad Indian Regime including its arm forces" who could not intercept such low key intrutions into their terrertory are the custodians of nuke's command and control.

Does the 'West' fails to understand this ? Ofcourse not

Its the ripe time for Pakistan to turn the tables on India.

Dont know if it falls within the 48 hours deadline … maybe they DID see some proof after all

DAWN.COM | Pakistan | Army raids suspected LeT compound in Kashmir

Utter incapability of India and its security personnel brought potential nuclear war.

Talk about irresponsibility.

Re: Pak agrees to 48-hour timetable for action against LeT

Its Politics and no Pakistani weakness. We have kept saying to control such "dehshat gurd" are a danger to Pakistan as well.

Most importantly Pakistani authoroties are activly looking for 'wanted' people for incidents in Pakistan in case you have forgotten 'Marriort, other suicide bombing etc'

India can take this as to their request if it makes them happy. But in Pakistan 'who cares what India thinks'

Re: Pak agrees to 48-hour timetable for action against LeT

Raindance,

This is not about India. If you believe that this time around we can do the same thing with arrest today and release after one week drama, you are mistaken. These guys are a danger to us and just wait to see US, EU and others join in on the diplomatic and economic pressure.

Foolish jihadis taking a region to the edge of nuclear war cannot be tackled by cosmetic actions. You just do not understand world politics and where we stand.

Our nuclear weapons guarantee only one thing - deterrent to a physical invasion. They cannot save us from slow economic strangulation and political pressure.

Re: Pak agrees to 48-hour timetable for action against LeT

^^ How shameful and disgusting @ arrest today and release a week later.

I agree. It won't be easy to repeat this ARREST TODAY RELEASE TOMORROW nonsense that Pakistan apparently did in the past.

These jihadis are a huge problem for you too. Kill em!

No ..... a crank call to a spooked leadership could have been responsible for a nuclear war..... and you are talking about responsibilty !!!!!!!

.

You guys need to secure your foreign ministry office, aira ghaira nathoo khaira can use your FM office as PCO? tsk tsk.

You need to a secure your president, aira ghaira nathoo khaira can scare him into a nuclear war tsk tsk

Actually this episode reminds me of Omar sharief ... guess i will call the Presidents house and ask them "Buddha ghar pe hai"

President is safe and sound, it was phone call not prank-visitor now you can go sleep soundly.

Re: Pak agrees to 48-hour timetable for action against LeT
