I am planning to paint my family room. I have not painted much recently, so now, my question is, anyone who has done this recently, any pointers? the biggest thing is edging, so, ppl still prefer tape or any new devices on the market to avoid the need of tapes and all for edging.
oh and those powered rollers, how much of a difference do they make over regular rollers. ?
I used the tape and covered the floor to stay on the safe side. And I never knew there was a power roller thing, does it operates with battery or what?
They have this spray paint thing, my bro's friend said its pretty cool but we just went with the traditional brush and roller.
well if you dont wanna use tape, ud have to use one of those mini sponges.. just more arduous! but gets the job done! havnt tried the power rollers, wouldn't invest in them eitherways! just use the normal roller. dress down, put on some music and just do it! and yeah... spread paper on the floor for any spills.. old flyers perhaps.
goodluck!
I hate painting…i’ve done it a few times (turned out great) and each time i swore never to paint again!
I use the paint edgers for the ceiling part and I tape up the trim at the bottom. I’ve done it without using anything and it just seemed very tedious so decided not to do that again. Buy some simple medium size rollers and mini rollers along with a medium size brush (for the corners). Dont forget drop clothes for the floor…especially since you have kids…accidents can happen.
Also…do all the prep work (ie move the furniture to the center, remove switch plates etc and tape up everything) a day before because for me personally that takes up most of the time. When it’s time to paint…it’ll seem like a breeze.
have never used an edger... When I was painting the room, I taped half of ceiling edges but was too lazy to tape the other half so just went slow with the brush... thats all....
We use regular rollers. We do tape off the edges. For the edges themselves there's this sureline edging tool -- it's a rectangular shape and it has wheels that will go up against the edge. Makes for a nice clean border.
Do edges first. Then paint the rest with rollers -- and paint over the part you did with edging tool to make the texture the same. You'll need 2-4 coats, depending on the color.
that sureline edging tool is what I was thinking, only bad thing i have heard it that since the wall/ceiling is not completely straight that edger leaves some gaps.
My view is that it may not e perect and that I may have to do touch ups in some areas but it probably beats having to tape.
maybe I will try it out.
On the other hand jose charges $100/room or so....
Go for Jose…
I personally have done all of the finishes…u name it ..I have done it…I vote for Jose…Not worth it..!!!..
If u do decide to do it on your own…Then if u have textured walls dont use tape, the sureline tool is better.Fill in the gaps with an artist’s brush later.
Wat colors r u planning to do..If its darker …u’ll end up doing a lot of coats..I know that all too well:bummer:..And if lighter…2 would suffice.I have heard that Behr has improved a lot in coverage.
Other tipes is JOSE sound the best choice..I know u wont get the satisfaction of feeling u did it yourself…but U can always say…We chose the color..and earned the money all by myself…
I plan to paint one of the rooms upstair this year…then again we have a guy too…who’ll have to do it…I am on strike…I wont do it …all my husband does is take care of the kids …So this time the fans and the paiting and my list goes on and on..will be done by the guy..!!

hmmmmmmmmm
you are right...it does leave some gaps but it's not very obvious unless of course you are a perfectionist. It sure beats using tape...besides like you mentioned...the tape wont be perfectly straight either since the wall and ceilings arent straight.
I dont know about Jose $100 a room is pretty cheap...I would be a bit worried about the kind of job he will end.

get a step ladder before you start.
Don't open up all paint boxes at once finish one then open next one.
If are going to fall down make sure some is around so they can laugh.
I use tape with that too -- maybe cuz I have my OCD moments. But I guess you'd be okay with out it. I hate taping, but more than the brushes used for the edge, I fear a rogue roller.
