From an art history perpective, Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group is worth a read up. They were a group of artists, post colonial, who experimented with modernism. Ram Kumar, Tyeb Mehta, S H Raza, Manishi Dey, among others.

Thanks for the input. Modernist art seems to dominate Indian scene of art after partition. Is there any painter who is famous for depicting Indian culture specially village life?
