Re: Painters from India
From an art history perpective, Bombay Progressive Artists' Group is worth a read up. They were a group of artists, post colonial, who experimented with modernism. Ram Kumar, Tyeb Mehta, S H Raza, Manishi Dey, among others.
Re: Painters from India
the most famous was M.F. Hussain [Maqbool Fida Hussain].
he was kinda eccentric. he often walked bare-feet. at the entrance to the Kennedy House at Aligarh Muslim University, there was a huge mural artwork which he did it for the university for free.

Thanks for the input. Modernist art seems to dominate Indian scene of art after partition. Is there any painter who is famous for depicting Indian culture specially village life?
Re: Painters from India
To some extent Tagore and Amrita Shergill, I think.
Shergill;
I’ve seen so many beautiful colour-rich paintings of village scenes, but I fail to recall the names of the artists.
Google Art Project is a wonderful resource. They have paintings from the Indian National Gallery of Modern Art, and National Museum pieces. Collections — Google Arts & Culture
