Pain!

So much pain!

Breast feeding is the most dreaded part of my day! it hurts sooo much that I’d compare it to labour pains! There’s no bleeding or any other obvious presentation, but feeding from one particular side hurts sooo much, the other side is manageable.

Do i give it time, my boy’s only 3 days old so maybe it’ll just get better with time? or is that wishful thinking? i dont stop feeding from the side that hurts because i want there to be a good supply of milk (and i think there is Alhumdulillah).

My doctor’s appointment isn’t for 2 weeks and quite frankly with these stitches I’m healing from I’d rather not travel unless absolutely necessary.

Anyone experience this? what helped?

Re: Pain!

Is he latching on properly? Contact a lactation consultant.
It will definitely get better with time, hang in here!

Pain!

Can you get a lactation consultant to visit you? It made all the difference for me. Also, don’t give up nursing on that side- it can make the problem worse. But, if you need a break, get a pump and nurse from the other side

Re: Pain!

i’m pretty sure he’s latched on ok… learnt all that with the first one.

i dont even know if any lactation consultants exists in karachi…

Re: Pain!

could be

  • latching - but you are saying baby is latching properly… are you breaking the latch properly too ?

  • engorgement - even if I was slightly engorged, it hurt to bf from the engorged side but after a while of bf it would get better. Can you check if the one breast gets engorged between feedings ? I had more supply on one side than the other so I had to feed more frequently on that side. I tried to even out the supply by limiting the feeding on that side and increasing on the other but then I was getting engorged on that one side. (isn’t it complicated !!!)

  • dryness/cuts - do you use any lanolin cream ? Sometimes dryness can cause small cuts and then it hurts. Try using lanolin cream anyways.

Re: Pain!

^ Yes, i do break the latch properly by breaking the vacuum inside his mouth with my pinky.

i think both sides are more or less equally engorged.

i’ll try the lanolin cream iA.

Re: Pain!

I am at work and cannot open FB here otherwise I would have posted the link. But just go to weldonmom’s page on facebook and over there is a separate post about lactation consultant in Karachi.

Hope things better for you !

Re: Pain!

watch some videos on latching, also call your hospital lactation consultant, see if you can visit her and get some help.

Maybe it’s a clogged milk duct…in which case, you’re doing awesome to continue nursing cos it will help clear it. Do try the lanolin, it def helps with dryness and sore nipples.

Re: Pain!

^^ in that case take hot shower and pump right after taking it. I was having lot of trouble with breast feeding. Try lanolin or olive oil on sore nipples.

Re: Pain!

Thank you all for your advise.

I’ve had my husband search for Lanolin cream here, but no one knew what it was at the pharmacy. It must be called something else here… guess we’ll try the pharmacies in posher areas lol.

the pain is a little less Alhumdulillah but its there… I get a drop of ZamZam and wet my nipples before every feed, Alhumdulillah with its shifa it has helped the pain as well.

Re: Pain!

May be the cream is available at baby shops like Mothercare , I cannot think of any other shop right now.
In any case, if the lanolin cream is not available, you can use olive oil or any buttercream to keep the nipples from drying. The only thing is you need to clean the cream before nursing. Lanolin cream (and most probably olive oil as well but be sure to check) is safe if not removed before nursing.

Re: Pain!

I had the same problem n my baby had thrush. Once gone I was bak to normal. So make sure he Dsnt have thrush.
Also try putting hot wet cloth on ur breast. It may help clear clogged ducts.
Congrats.

Re: Pain!

I am allergic to lanolin and was recommended olive oil by my lactation consultant. It is very safe and you don’t even need a wash before feeding.
